Volkswagen golf - No idea how much to sell car for - Hilltophood

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping for some advice on how to best sell my car as I've only done it once before and had a lucky quick sale. It's a T reg VW Golf SE 1.6L, it's got 18" alloys and is in good condition. I've looked at similar cars in the area on auto trader etc and undercut them, but had no serious interest. I've got in on several websites for 780 ONO at the moment, and would appreciate if someone could advise if I'm listing it too high a price? Or what the best way is to decide how much to list it for?

Thanks in advance

It's quite an old car so £780 seems a little high.

How many miles has it done and how long is the MOT? Is there any service history and when was it last serviced?

Has it had any new parts fitted in the past 6 months or so? e.g. things like new battery, new exhaust, brake pads / discs etc can all add value to a car.

Not sure I can advise on how and where to sell your car but I used Ebay recently to sell my 2001 Polo and it sold within 2 hours for £550. Buyer collected the same day.

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice. It's done 104k miles, 8k since 2012, MOT til december, but not had a service since end of 2014. New battery and 2 new tyres in October, have replaced the clutch since I've owned it. Nothing else has needed replacing.

I'll try lowering the price some more - if I put it on eBay and end up selling via another site, do you know if it's possible to cancel the auction if no bidders? I've not sold anything on it before.

As well as ditching the 18" wheels I'd give it a minor service (oil and filter at the very least). Some potential buyers might not be put off by lack of an oil change for 18 months or so but I would... despite the low miles it's done since 2012.

When / if you get another car please get the oil and filter replaced at least every 12 months or 10,000 miles - that will not only make your engine last longer but also add value when you eventually come to sell it on.

Any car of that of age that is reasonable condition, works and has a years MOT is worth somewhere between £500 and £750, depending on where you live (bizarrely worth less in a city than in a rural area).

I'd suspect that the 18 inch alloys are putting people off. This is for two reasons - firstly it says 'boy racer' which implies the car may have been modified in other ways or mistreated, and secondly someone paying £500 for a car won't want to have to pay £200 to replace a tyre if they get a puncture.

You'd be better off getting a set of OEM wheels and tyres (max 16 inch) from a scrap yard and fitting those to the car. There will be plenty around for a Golf. This won't affect the value of the car, but will make it easier to sell. You can then sell the 18 inch alloys and tyres separately on Ebay or an VW enthusiasts website. If the wheels are in decent conditon, they will fetch up to £200 for the set fitted with tyres.

Thanks, I'll look into replacing the wheels. Is it something I can do myself, or will I need to take it to a garage?

Selling a car like this on Ebay (preferably with 'normal' rather than 'laddish' wheels fitted, as suggested above), you might well be surprised what it fetches.

EVery time I've sold an old car that way, I've started it at 99p with no reserve. Friends even sold their horrible rusty old Ka that way which had 2 months MOT left, and it went for more than £300.

Advertise it well, photograph it properly (no angled stupid magazine-type pics, just the basics), tell the truth about it warts and all, and watch the bidders roll in.

As RobJP says, tell the truth, warts and all. Buyers will appreciate honesty. Sold my old Focus on Gumtree the same afternoon as I placed the ad, even though I posted all that was bad as well as good. The ad cost me nothing.

I know it's obvious--but have you tried trading it in for what you are going for next?. A friend with an old Golf valued on Autotrader for about £500 actually got £1500 when trading it in against a new Polo.

It probably wasn't a true trade in price. You usually can either negitiate a lower purchase price or larger trade in price ( or somewhere in-between)

Personally as I do a highish mileage I ignore depreciation/future trade-in price. I buy cheap and effectively throw away at the end of it service life. Any actual money I get from the old car is just a bonus

that's right--keep it till it is no longer viable--but do you "budget" to properly maintain it during it's "life" with you?

Very much so. There is usually a crunch point that causes you to think time to change. With my 2003 Superb I it was bodywork, rust was starting to be a problem

I semi - retired my 2001 Octavia I 1.4 after a high mileage for the first 6 years - still going strong and bodywork rustfree except for a trapped seatbelt ding

Our entire fleed is always well maintained and I always select fixed rather than extended service intervals

Clearly if you get a major failure beyond 6 years then you need to think carefully re viability. If it's borderline it can be still worth an expensive repair, better the devil you know

Generally maintenance has always been a low number of £100's every year and tyre sizes are part of my car buyin decisions.

I usually buy a lower powered version of a model
