Hyundai Santa Fe 2009 - Replacement engine at 88,000 miles - Karen Goode

We have a Hyundai Santa Fe – 2009, which has completed 88,000 miles. Last week, the cylinder blew whilst driving on the motorway and we now need a new engine. Two questions:

Is this a known fault on this model?

Who can reliably fit a re-serviced engine – any ideas?

Thanks so much.

Can you explain exactly what went wrong, is there a gaping hole in the side of the block or is it just the cylinder head gasket which has failed?

Very rare for a cylinder to blow unless due to a conrod failure, also rare these days.

As Galileo said, if you can provide any extra information about exactly what failed, it would help ... but unfortunately, the engine was 7 years old and had done nearly 90,000 miles. Catastrophic component failures are rare these days, but they can and do still happen.

Is it the 2.2 diesel or 2.7 V6 petrol?

If it's a head gasket, that can be replaced along with the head(s) skimmed and pressure tested - easiest if the engine is removed from the car, so not likely to be cheap.
