Ford Mondeo Estate MK3 Tdci - Inflating sound when ignition key turned - Loulabye
I'm getting a strange inflating sound when I turn the key to light the dashboard. Also sometimes when I turn ignition off a deflating can be heard for a few seconds. It's the first time I've owned a diesel so sorry if this is obvious. It sounds like a beach ball inflating and deflating. What on earth is it? Airbag? Pump of some sort? Thanks for any help

At a guess, diesel pump pressurising.

Howeverr, as it's an estate, does the car have self-levelling suspension ? Because if so, then it could well be the pump for that.

I asked exactly the same question when I first bought my Mark 3 Mondeo!

There's a small fan which blows air over a temperature sensor to measure the ambient temperature. The noise is probably that. It starts when you turn the ignition on and runs down when you turn it off.

It's quite normal - nothing to worry about!

Edit..................I've even found my original thread!
