Toyota Auris 2008 - Oil Leak Help!!!! Quoted £1200 for repair - glennelg123

A while back I noticed that all my engine oil had disappeared. The local garage could not find a leak and just added oil. Recently I had my car serviced at the local toyota dealer (jemca bromley) and they told me that they found an oil leak while carrying out the service. I had them investigate the leak they tell me that the leak is coming from the offside drive shaft seal and the selector shaft seal and they tell me the oil that's leaking is engine oil. They quote me £1200 for the repair. Quotes from independent garages were in the £150 range. My question is why have toyota quoted me £1200 and how much should this really cost. Would these seals leak engine oil?

Thanks for your help!

Bit confused here. There is engine oil in the engine and gearbox oil in the gearbox. These are 2 separate items. What has the driveshaft seal got to do with the engine oil loss?

So, what are we talking about here? An engine oil leak or a gearbox oil leak? If the latter, have you had the gearbox oil level checked?

I suspect there are two issues here, the engine oil ran low, that could be because you failed to check it often enough and maybe travelled more miles than you thought in the meantime.

The leaks if from where they are reported will be gearbox oil, and as suggested at the very least get the gearbox oil level checked and topped up till you get the leak fixed.

A mechanic should be able to tell from the smell of the leaking oil whether its engine or gear oil, gear oil is usually pungent stuff.

Thanks for all your responses. Well the toytoa dealer told me the oil leak was from the drive shaft seal and selector shaft seal. What sort of oil would leak from there?

Assuming that the leaks are from those seals, and not from an engine leak above draining down to appear to be leaks from those....unlikely but playing devils advocate here...then its gearbox oil.

Where you park is there getting to be a bad stain, how bad is the leak, if its just a weep i'd be inclined to leave it be, and just keep the box topped up now and again (easy DIY), and if the car needs a clutch or driveshaft removed for a split gaiter or similar get the seals replaced then.

Do not neglect the gearbox oil level.

The leak is small, it takes a few days for a small stain to form and forms underneath the front of the car. Do engine oil and gear oil look different from each other? I was thinking of using one of those UV dyes to see if it's engine oil. Also why on earth would they quote me £1200 for a repair. They must know I would not go for it!

It only takes a small amount of oil to make a big stain. My first car (a Ford Escort mark 3) had an oil leak from a driveshaft oil seal that would stain our drive.

I did an experiment to see how much oil was needed to make a stain on our driveway the size of the palm of my hand (i.e. about 4 inches diameter) overnight. What I found was, a teaspoon (5ml) of oil would be more than enough to make a 4-inch stain.

It was easier to just sling a pint of oil in the gearbox every 6 months than to fix the leak, it never got any worse.

They don't want the work!

Spread sand or an old piece of black carpet where you usually park to catch the drips.

DO NOT NEGLECT THE GEARBOX OIL LEVEL - HAVE IT CHECKED.

If it's driveshaft or selector shaft then it must be gearbox. No need to faff with dyes!

Is there a way for someone inexperienced like me to check the gearbox oil level?

I doubt the filler level plug position will be in what passes for a drivers handbook these days, but you never know, Toyota handbooks are good with their more industrial products, i can't vouch for the car books.

Unless you want to invest in a Haynes manual, if one is made for your car, you would probably be able to find all necessary info where the level/filler plugs (usually but not always the same plug) are situated, normally half way up the side of the gearbox, and what oil to use, on the Toyota forums.

You will most likely need to jack the car up but still level unless you have a friend with a pit or lift, its possible but unlikely that the level plug will be accessible from above, remove plug and top up with the correct gear oil till it runs out, let the excess drain, refit plug job done.

Course it could be sensible if you're going to top it up to buy a larger can and give the box an oil change at the same time if one wasn't done in recent times as part of normal servicing...Toyota have never gone down the road of sealed for life cobblers (or more truthfully till it goes bang out of warranty as some other makers), a gearbox oil change will be somewhere in the service list.
