The heater on my 1994 BMW 525 emits an occasional burning smell into the cabin. Any ideas on cause?

No such smell with my own 1992 E34 525i. I have noticed this on one or two other cars though, especially when switching on the heater after the summer, and have assumed that it is dust that has accumulated during the months of non-use.
Sorry, can't think of anything more sensible than that. If you could to identify what type of smell it is, someone may be able to come up with a *proper* answer.
