Volvo V50 2 Litre Diesel 2008 - Volvo V50 - low idle, no throttle response - Mercedes driver

I have a 2008 V50 2.0 diesel that has done around 105,000 miles. I have an intermittent problem where when I turn on engine it has low idle and no throttle response. To date the following work has been done to it, first by our local Volvo specialist and more recently by a Volvo dealer: (1) filter changed; (2) excess carbon removed around throttle housing; (3) EGR valve has been replaced. I am told by the Volvo dealer that the diagnostic testing is not showing any codes. Problem still not resolved and it is also throwing out black smoke. Issue tends to resolve itself after a number of attempts are made. I am not at all technically minded and so any suggestions gratefully received.

Codes or not there IS a fault,

black smoke is too much fuel delivered or incomplete combustion.

I'd start with an njector leak back test.

and I'm curious of the injector correction values reading live data.

Code reading is ONLY the start of the process.

So I'dsuggest you find a diagnostic specialisst.

Black smoke is indicative of too much fuel, or too little air. As the above poster says, both amount to the same thing, and will result in incomplete combustion. If your EGR valve was clogged then so is the rest of the air intake right up to the inlet valves likely to be too. I'd concentrate your efforts here, but another thing worth checking is the throttle position sensor which may possibly have a poor contact.

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue on a 2007 V50 2.0 diesel.

Car starts but does not rev.

No error code.

Every 5-6 restart the problem goes away and if its not there when the car is started it does not come back for the duration of the drive.

It has refilled the eolys fluid at 60k km and somehow also at 75k km.

Any ideas? Manuals for debugging which sensor might be off? Problem went away some weeks but is now a daily problem once again.

Get a scanner plugged in on live data readings and check the fuel rail pressure reading.

Having the same issue without the smoke. Sometimes the car starts no problem sometimes it starts with idle at 500rpm and no throttle response. Turn it off and on a few times and 99% it will fire up as normal and be ok. Drives perfectly after that. The problem seems to appear when the fuel is low or i have just refuelled.

I have no idea what to do to fix it. no error codes :(

Solved:Had a similar problem every other day. whilst driving I would lose throttle response, erratic idle and no power and need to hold throttle down and eventually very slowly the rpm comes up and it would suddenly clear and rev up high with a puff of black smoke?? no fault codes.

Removed throttle body and EGR body, but other than needing a clean it did not fix fault. Noted a week later, with the engine cover off, a lot of air was bleeding into and running along through the clear fuel pipe across front of the engine, removed the fuel line quick connect coupler fittings fitted to either side of the filter, cleaned seals inside fitting and re seated filter housing and the screw top valve on top of fuel filter housing, reassembled, used a cheep halfords fuel primer / vacuum pump to assist in getting the pump primed (connected to the return fuel pipe) when it started no air bubbles were seen running along pipe and the fault has not reoccurred after 4 weeks. (must be safe to think it is sorted but it will probably go and play up again tomorrow now i have posted this)
