Jaguar X-Type diesel 2.0. - noisy tappet sound when under load - raysheppard

hi ,i have a xtype diesel 2.0 55 plate 90k its got a tappet sound when you acelerate ,its sound like a diesel knock but the car drives fine a bit of black smoke if i boot it but goes really well ,there are no lights on so im struggling,i think it maybe an injector or the diesel pump is worn ,any ideas ,thanks ray.

Bit difficult to diagnose when we don't have the car in front of us enabling us to hear the noise.

Thought of trying a garage.

i been told that the tappets on xtype diesel are shimmed and it is not like a camshaft problem. i had a transit diesel 54 plate with the same noise but a lot more like a machine gun and it was the diesel pump.

Hard to say without hearing it but at 10 years and 90,000 miles old it's probably slightly worn injectors causing a bit of diesel clatter.

If there are no other signs of wear (i.e. it doesn't use much oil, coolant level doesn't change and coolant is clean, starts fine when cold or hot, and the fuel consumption hasn't increased dramatically), I wouldn't worry about it.

You could try running a couple of tanks of premium diesel through it or using some Millers or a similar additive, just in case there's crud built up on the injector nozzles affecting the spray pattern. A good Italian tune-up would help with this too, you've no DPF to worry about.

I would concur, the injector spray pattern can change as you increase the fuel flow, knocking is usually caused by the fuel not being properly vapourised.

Me too. I'd say a hosing injector is most likely.

hi ,thank you for your replies that what i was hoping to hear ,any idea how to find which injector could be faulty ,i will try expensive diesel and a injector cleaner but just in case i would like to fine the duff one ,thanks again ray.

What you definitely don't do is slacken an injector pipe on any common rail diesel engine. The operating pressures can get as high as 30,000psi, and so slackening a pipe is potentially dangerous.

What you could do is use a stethoscope placed close to each injector in turn and listen for one that's noisy. You may be able to detect on which cylinder fuel is jetting by the increased noise, assuming of course that an injector is the cause.

Injector cleaner might help, but usually the cause is worn nozzles, not blocked nozzles as does happen with petrol injectors. Common Rail Diesel fuel systems have several injection phases, for pre, main, and post injection. This is why each injector has a code which must be programmed into the ECM so that it knows how to operate each injector correctly. Injectors are very precisely set up, and is certainly not a DIY job. A good diesel specialist will be able to test your injectors for operation and wear, and make sure they're correctly programmed to the ECM.
