Toyota RAV4 - Winter wheels and tyres, TPMS - APV

Recently took the plunge and bought a new Rav4 AWD 2.0i CVT M-drive, as recommended by HJ.

Car has tyre pressure monitoring system (now, I have learned, mandatory on new vehicles) consisting of sensors behind each wheel valve talking wirelessly to a module in the car. Should pressure drop in any tyre, a warning lamp will glow.

I use two sets of wheels on my cars. I have ordered a second set of wheels from mytyre, shod with Nokian winter tyres, with Schrader EZ1210 TPMS sensors fitted.

My question: How do I get the TPMS sensors in the new wheels to talk to the module in the car? It seems unlikely that it is a DIY job. Toyota service department at supplying dealer not sounding confident they can do it. Surely someone out there has the expertise to do this? I live in Derbyshire.

I recently bought a set of winter tyres on steel rims for the wifes new Nissan Note from MyTyres. I ordered them with TPMS valves fitted and it clearly stated on the MyTyres page for the car and valve that they were self learning. So I fitted the wheels, drove and all has been OK.

But it appears from the MyTyres site that your car requires a programming device with an ODB connection, its clearly stated on the info page for your car and valves. There may be local indies that have the kit but it may mean a trip to Toyota, a phone call or 2 should sort it.

Come spring when you swap them over again you will need to make another visit, at least you will know where to go next time.

That's what I thought too. Calls to Toyota and indies so far have produced the sound of heads being scratched and little else. Since most of northern Europe runs separate summer/winter wheels, I hope and expect it can be done....

You can buy a DIY tool for this for about £140 if you have a laptop to use it with but, A good pro diagnostic scanner should be able to do it.

Try calling your nearest Bosch service centre, They can probably do it with their KTS diagnostic kit.

Indies I can understand to some extent (althought it has to be said they will be loosing business if they cannot service current technology) but Toyota dealers MUST be able to reset TPMS since its a fitment of the cars they sell. I would expect it to be one of the items that gets checked on the PDI.

Try toyota Customer Services, they should be able to help.

If not swap it for a Nissan Qashqai or X-Trail, as I said they are self learning.
