M1 Roadworks - Chirpy99

Had the misfortune to go to Leeds today on the M1 ,there were 3 sections of very subsatantial roadworks between about Bolsover and Leeds . What a complete pain. There doesnt seem to have been muchprogress made since I last went to that neck of the woods back in august . I saw a few signs saying they were working on making it a smart motorway whats this all about?

I feel sorry for anyone having to use this section on a regular basis,

Unfortunately it's-

A smart motorway (formerly managed motorway) is a section of motorway in Great Britain which uses active traffic management (ATM) techniques to increase capacity by use of variable speed limits and hard shoulder running at busy times.

Basically trying to get a quart out of a pint pot IMHO.

The section around good old Dennis Skinner's patch i believe has had to be redone again, something about the miles of concrete centre reservation being wrong.

Smart motorway, ah yes the cheapish but ultimately temporary answer to a never ending population growth, make the hard shoulder wide and sturdy enough for live lane running so that under the right circumstances it can be used as the 4th (inside) lane under closed circuit scrutiny...that doesn't work in the West Mids as several times now i've encountered broken down vehicles on the hard shoulder when it's a live lane.

20 years hence i suspect much of the motorway network (M25 especially) will have to be 5 or 6 lane each way and it still won't be enough, and they'll still be charging for the Dartford crossing, mind you we'll need another by then, still i'll be in me dotage if i haven't kicked the bucket so best o' luck to ya'll.

I am told that part of the problem is that the workforce has to travel into work using the coned off section. As the speed limit in there is 10 (?) mph it means they spend two hours or more of every shift travelling.

OP - you were lucky. Up until a few weeks ago the stretch was from junction 31 in South Yorkshire to the four lane section near Nottingham!

I did noticed they are now stating the section from M1/M62 junction to south of Wakefield, which has had cones for almost 3 years, will be fully operational from next month.

However I'm sure it will just mean the cones are moved to finish the stretches between Wakefield and Sheffield.

just remember it's the smart motorways that have been getting the unmarked motorway speed cameras ... and at 80mph you are in real danger of being prosecuted

On smart motorways the speed cameras are on the gantrys. Average speed signs are clearly shown.

If you are doing 80mph in a 70mph limit you should be prosecuted.

On some variants of managed motorway (eg M42 between M6 & M40) the cameras are in the gantries and over each lane. They seem to pop off every few seconds.

Later versions and certainly the lower cost smart motorway have some plain grey cameras mounted on the nearside. The usual suspects have called them 'stealth' or 'revenue' cameras and cried foul.

Roadworks will be removed from a 6 mile stretch of the M1 in Yorkshire and the East Midlands from Monday (28 September), to help drivers on their journeys. ... From Monday restrictions will be lifted between junction 30 and junction 31.

The M3 is Surrey is just as bad - creation of a 'smart' motorway all the way from junction 2 to 4, for the rest of 2015 and most of 2016.

'Smart' isn't the word that immediately comes to mind.

Let us hope that Patrick McLoughlin means what he says and he really does put an end to roadworks over this sort of distance. I forget how many miles he said was to be the maximum - 2 or 3 I think.
