One I haven't seen before, Spotted on the A12 at Darsham in Suffolk speed camera van with camera on top of telescopic post about 30 foot high looking over a low hill !

I'm not doubting what you say, but wouldn't it be virtually impossible to focus or align a laser speed camera on approaching cars front number plates from the top of a 30 foot high pole?

Could it have been a CCTV camera?

Could have been, but why? van was usual speed camera van white with speed camera symbol, not bright yellow like some. Parked in layby at the railway crossing, thought he wasnt working as it was closed up, then spotted the mast.

I suppose it doesn't matter how difficult it is to focus, the results can be wildly inaccurate - because if they say you're speeding, then you're speeding.

I wonder how many of these cameras are judging speed incorrectly but you have to recourse to argue the results so the fines roll in nicely.

It's the sort of place where some foolish drivers might take a chance on the crossing.

Ok-I know that level crossing from years ago, been over it dozens of times-just north of Yoxford and the Satis House restaurent on the A12?

IMHO it would be the transport police looking for chancers on the crossing, I can't see it being a speed camera somehow.

That would be my guess too. I've seen the van on display to public at London Euston a couple of years ago.

My vote goes for a CCTV/ANPR camera!

I have recently seen a low tech version of this involving a British Transport Policeman (in a tall hat) simply noting down registrations of people not complying with the box junction/jumping the lights on a very busy level crossing! tinyurl.com/oulton-broad
