Hyundai i40 - Warranty claims - TopScot

I would generally rate Hyundai and Kia the best in the business for paying out on warranty clames. However why are main dealers so reluctant to do this since they are getting paid regardless?

Busy workshop charging punters £60-£100+ per hour + profit on parts used e.g. £10 per litre on oil when it costs them £2.00 per litre.

Warranty work probably in the £20-£25 region with no uplift on parts.

The thing is, we don't know the full details of the contracts the garages have with the manufacturers - and are never likely to do so.

The contracts could have any number of 'awkward' terms in, such as the dealer being responsible for part of the claim costs, or to be entirely responsible for claims under a certain value, or to supply the labour part of administering claims for free, or ... well, anything really.

We had a Ceed for 5 years. During that time it went to the dealers 3 times for "warranty" work

1 Small paint defect spotted on collection. Corrected the following week by their in-house valeter/smart repair chap.

2 A/C stopped working. Needed a new condensor, ordered and fitted next day.

3 Wife said car felt hesitant (but it felt OK to me). They did full diagnostic, the only code found was a recent part completed regen (which we knew about). They carried out a forced regen. Car felt no different to me and wife said it was fine afterwards.

On each occasion there was no arguement, no asking for a diagnostic fee or the usual excuse of needing to get approval from the manufacturer. Very happy with the way we were treated.

But from the forums it does appear there are good and bad dealers and probably just as many internet trolls. The dealer we used was described by some as being rude, useless and obstructive yet we would rate them as one of the best (if not the best) dealer we have used for any brand.

Just booked the Nissan in for a small problem that is warranty work. They want the car for a full day to do an initial appraisal before they will book the car in for the work. No courtesy cars are available for the appraisal but may be for any remedial work. After our Kia experiences not impressed.

As posted, it's the difference between good and bad dealers - my Santa Fe needed a lot of different jobs doing during it's warranty, so very disappointing, but not once did the dealer even suggest that they might not be covered by the warranty.

There are some awful rip off hyundai dealers out there, its worth doing your research.

Often that's the multi-franchise groups that care little from their brand or their customers - I doubt the proportion of good:bad is any worse at Hyundai than any other mainstream brand, certainly isn't in my experience.

From previous experience with our current Hyundai main dealer my overall findinding is that they (the dealer) are primarily concerned to check that the problem causing concern is one that Hyundai will reimburse them for before agreeing to carry the work out. And to this end I have, more than once, had to take the car in for an (at least) half day appraisal and then make another (at least) half day appointment to have the work done....so I can see why the above point was made. And some (but not all) of these issues have been quite minor.

On the whole the issues have been attended to, albeit sometimes needing to have mountains to climb to get the issues sorted. But these mountains were in Hyundai territory... not at the dealer.

But I haven't necessarily been put off buying there again, so I suppose that says something in their favour.

After 4 years Yeti ownership Skoda have not given me cause for complaint having dealt with the few warranty occurrences well enough (and having volunteered to deal with the DSG matters efficiently enough and to my satisfaction).

Can't speak about Honda though....had one for several years but it never went wrong.

We have an i30 estate which is just coming up to 6 years old. We only had 1 issue during the 5 year warranty which was a fault with the central locking when the car was 4 years old. It ended up taking 5 weeks to fix as a part was needed but we were given a courtesy car - initially an i10, but when they realised it was going to take a while they swapped it for an i30 estate from their used car stock. After a couple of weeks they sold that and swapped it for a Tuscon, again from their used stock. In each case they delivered the cars to us at home.

We've had all services and the repair done at the dealer we bought the car from, but a couple of years ago they stopped selling new cars and became a service, aftersales and warranty outlet
