Citroen C4 VTR+ 1.6 - anyone had any experience with the 1.6 C4? - Mr Carrot Cake

Looking at a 2008 C4 with the 1.6 petrol engine developed with BMW. What are peoples' opinions of this car and engine?

Fantastic engine until the German engineering shows through - the timing chain snaps or slips and the engine is toast. BMW managed to turn a bullet-proof PSA engine into a ticking timebomb.

The C4 is no class leader but it does everything well - a decent and good value car.

The one I saw today had a distinct ticking noise from the engine when the bonnet was up. Is this normal?

I've done a bit of googling and it seems the ticking/tapping noise is normal for these engines especially when cold.

Timing chain rattle is usually impending death for that engine. If it is a tick rather than a rattle then you should be okay - if you do buy the car - change the oil between services - cam chains don't deal too well with old oil - particularly modern long life oil which suspends wear particles in the oil rather than allows sludge to form. It's a shame about the timing chain problems coz it really is a gem of an engine.

Had this engine in Mrs 72dudes previous car, Peugeot 207 auto. As SteveLee says, very smooth and eager to rev, surprisingly sprightly, but pulls fine from lowish revs too.

NOT an economical engine, mind. Best tankful was 41.5 MPG on a 200 mile round trip, but could easily drop to mid 20's around town/short journeys.

Obviously the automatic box (TC) had an effect compared with a manual, but don't expect much more than mid/high 30's overall.
