Hi all, the rear wiper and washer do not work! All the fuses are good, the relay is good (i swapped it with the one for the front wipers, they are identical)

The relay doesn't make the clicking sound when i use the switch.

They were working before! I am at a loss!

If theres a broken wire somewhere near the bootlid hinge, wouldn't the clicking noise still be heard?

Also on a separate note, where can i get a woring diagram?

The wiring going into the rear lock mechanism, part number 8218849, are loose and not currently connected!

Ah, E36 compact used to suffer with this problem, damned expensive it was too, hope it's not the same fault.

The spindle gets full of salt and general road filth and seizes up, when you next use the rear wiper it strips the worm drive in the motor.

Easy to remove examine and refit, a quick prod round with a circuit tester will show if current is reaching the motor, hopefully just a broken wire where the bootlid hinges or something similar affecting the wiper motor, and yes the relay will still operate whether connected or not.

The rear wash wipe will not work if the system sees the tailgate open.If there is a problem with the rear latch/lock wiring,then perhaps this is a related issue.

the spindle moves freely, however yes i agree, if the bootlid is open, or the ECU thinks it is, the washer/wiper wont work!

Wouldnt the relay still 'click' when it is energised though?

There is no direct connection between the wiper switch and the motor.When the wiper is switched on,a signal is sent to the body control module.If the system is "go",then the bcm will switch the relay on,and the wiper will sweep.Same for the washer system.On some of these the washer will only work when the wiper arm is in a certain position of the blade sweep.

The wiring to my rear window switch is broken. How do i prise off that switch?
It seems stuck on to the threaded metal shaft?

Ok the rear window switch and wiper pivot were seized on. I had to cut both off, and have fitted new ones.

However the connector to the window lock mechanism, PN 8218849, is loose .That is, the wires are loose from the connector. There are 4 wires, one of which is showing 12v on a multimeter.

What order are these wires supposed to be when inserted into the connector?

I have tried all 16 combinations, yet the window swicth still has no effect!

I can bypass, and put 12v to the mechanism, and the window opens.

But it is of no use. And currently, the rear wash/wipe isn't working ,and i suspect the car thinks the rear window is open (it isn't), thus not allowing rear wash/wipe to work!

please help!

Perhaps the only way to get accurate info is to buy time on the Bmw service line;Check here oss.bmw.de/index.jsp

All sorted now. New pivot and microswitch, and some fiddly wiring. BMW main stea*er suck! They couldnt find a part number that ebay sellers were using, and tried to sell me the whole loom!
