Volkswagen Passat - Giving a car to a friend-Procedure? - JohnX

After 10 years of owning my trusty Passat on which I have posted on this forum in the past mainly on its superb mileage,it is now finally time to let go and rather than sell it..

Im giving it to a friend.

However could anyone let me know the formality of ending ownership especially since no money is changing hands.

You fill in the appropriate part of the V5 with their details. You BOTH sign the V5. YOU are legally responsible for sending the V5 to DVLA. Best sent by recorded post.

Do note that the car tax will immediately and automatically be cancelled, and a refund issued to you. THe new owner will be responsible for taxing the car.

In addition, don't forget to tell your insurance that you no longer own the car, and it is to be taken 'off-risk'

No money changing hands makes no difference.

Just fill in the V5 and away you go. Remind her that he/she has to tax and insure the car from the day of transfer. Your tax gets refunded automatically, you'll have to do the insurance yourself.

Thank you RobJP and Marlot for that

Whats a bit of a pain is that the insurance renewal letter from Endsleigh contains no mention of the number of years No Claim Discount I have currently built up.

If I purchase a car say after a few months, how would one prove that I have the NCD when at that time I would no longer be a registered customer of Endsleigh?.

Ask them to send you a letter confirming your NCD.
