N/A - Tring to Waltham Abbey - M25 junction 20-25 c/w - Ben5053

Hi All,

First of all, sorry for the boring commuting post! Just wanted to ask some advice on potential time it will take me to get between Tring and Waltham Abbey in the mornings/evenings rushour.

My gf works in Bicester and i've just been offered a new job in Waltham Abbey starting in a few months so we're looking at moving to Tring to even out the commutes.

Google is telling me go straight down the A41 to juction 20 of the M25 then off at junction 25. Says it will take 40 minutes. Any idea how long this is likely to take in rushour (anyone do a similar route?) or have any advice for altering the route so I get on a junction 21a instead. is it worth it?

Any other advice welcome, thanks in advance!

Ben

What time of day do you actually inend travelling (a) to and (b) from work?

Judging by observation from London bound trains crossing the M25 near J20 morning rush hour begins around 7:00 and continues to perhaps 09:30 and beyond. If you have a choice early will better than late. You are though heading east rather than west. The busiest bit of M25 is the section from M1>M40>LHR etc.

The A41/J20 route looks simple and I'm not sure there's any advantage in going to the M1 junction instead.

What you might need though is a couple of diversionary strategies for when it all goes t*ts up 'cos of an accident.

If the travelling gets to be a 'mare is working partly at home or compressed hours an option?

Bromp's on the money again (he'd have made a good lorryist), you are going in the best direction both ways.

Friday afternoons are the worse day by far, so i'd experiment on the homeward journey by slipping off at London Colney and using the M10 (now apparently A414) into Hemel, then nip down St Albans Hill and Durrants Road to avoid the hell that is the magic roundabout at the bottom of the hill, them rejoin the A41 for home.

You can always slip through Potter Bar if the M25 is solid before the A1 junction and go along the B556 via South Mimms, that brings you out at the London Colney junction again...and if you check the map a handy back route into and out of the South Mimms services neatly avoiding M25/A1 roundabout hell.

Thats just one suggestion, as Bromp suggests its worth learning back ways before you need to duck and dive when the M25 gets clogged solid.

I go from Chorleywood to Hatfield daily so shorter both ends - on the whole I dont' envy you! However now the M25 widening has moved round into Essex things are far better than they were a couple of years ago. 90% of the time the M25 itself should be fine, even at the height of the rush hour. The Aroads to and from are the problems. Dont' come off at 21a - the North Orbital Road (A405 and A414) are horrible - some very congested roundabouts.

Good luck!

Just remember to watch your speed on the M25 on the section which is a smart motorway (4th lane is the former hard shoulder) - this is where the unmarked speed cameras exists, and they enforce the 70 mph even when the road is empty - without a care for the world!

Agree. The satnav tries to send me that way going between Northampton and Dover.

Tried it once. The roundabouts would be horrible at any time. Towing a caravan they were a nightmare.

I can tell you with some experience that the section fron Tring to the M25 will be busy from about 7.15 until 9.00, sometimes later. Friday mornings are usually OK. If the M1 is blocked then the A41 will be much worse. I used to commute to Borehamwood via J23 and the M25 was usually OK up to there at least. I would guess total journey time 45 mins for a clear run. Add 10 mins on the A41 if you hit the rush. Interestingly, after the recession in 2008 the A41 became much quieter but it has got progressively busier again over the last 2 years.

Coming the other way it's usually fine.

I understand the North Orbital at present suffers from severe congestion at times due to bridge works, with lane closures. These are scheduled to finish at the end October, I believe.

However, in normal circumstances the North Orbital is still pretty busy in the rush hours.

My golden rule for the M25 is -do your driving no later than 06.40 in the morning and after 20.00 at night. This might force a longer route for your times--but your journey will always be consistent.

Suggest--Ivinghoe,Markyate,Old Welwyn,Hertford etc.....one hour.

"Suggest--Ivinghoe,Markyate,Old Welwyn,Hertford etc.....one hour."

As someone who was born and brought up in the area, I'm not at all sure that this would be only one hour except on clear roads. A lovely, scenic route to be sure, and worth it for therapeutic reasons, perhaps, but not practical as a commute. Much of it is on little more than country lanes, lots of junctions and crossing other major routes.
