2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 (80 PS) Match - Timing Chain or Belt - Radiovox

Hello

I have just bought a 2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 (80 PS) Match.

Please can someone confirm whether this engine has a timing chain or a belt? I have had a look online but the information seems to vary.

The car only has 31,000 miles on the clock - if the engine has a timing belt, would you recommend that this is changed?

Thank you in advance!

Well my AUTO DATA lists 7 different 1.4 engine varients fitted to tha tcar from petrol to diesel and ALL are fitted with belts,

No chains.

And if your keeping it get the belt changed.

Or not,

Honestly me and other garages don't make much money renewing timing belts,

But we do make a hell of a lot more if the belt snaps.

Your choice,

Hardway, thank you for checking!

First job when I get the car then me thinks.

Afraid Auto Data is wrong.

The 2010 onwards Polo 1.4 TSi GTi 180 PS used the chain cam dual charged engine and a DSG 7 speed gearbox at the limit of its torque capabilities. A perfect combination.

The belt drive 1.4 TSi was not introduced until 2013.

Irrelevant to the OP but shows all that is in print is not correct.

What A/D wrong!!

Shocker.

I would be quit willing to buy an alternative but where is it,

Seriously,

Any suggestions.

The 2008 Polo 1.4 (80) has the old non turbo 16v engine that has cam belts (two of them!) and plastic pulleys. They must be changed at 40k or 4 years . It does not have the tsi or fsi engine

Just remembered - Change the water pump and aux belts at the same time

In the Volkswagen handbook which came with the car, it says the timing belt needs replacing every 80,000 miles. There is no time interval (ie 80,000 miles or 4 years), it only mentions the mileage. I asked the dealership and they said the same.

Is Volkswagen's own specified interval reliable, or is it best to get the work done anyway?

I would recommend getting the work done now.

As 'Big John' has said, get the tensioners / rollers and waterpump changed at the same time.
