What car should i buy? - Dexter7176
Hi, i need to buy another car but am confussed in what to get. I have between £4500 and £6000 to spend. I have three kids so it needs to be a 5 seater at the least. The main problem i have is i do hardly any miles so i want a petrol, just had a turbo fail on a diesal so looking to move away from Td. But it has to be big enough to fit everyone in for trips, eg short breaks so may need to take bikes etc. evrything of a good size seems to a TD. Any help is appreciated.

have a look at my recent post 'seats for five tall adults' which is the story of my recent similar quest. I ended up with an Auris which is great, though admittedly a manual. I did try an automatic Nissan Note which looks like it would fit your requirements, though of course may not be in your neighbourhood. It's still on the market. See www.motorstoreltd.co.uk/used-cars/nissan-note-1-6-...5

I would say that the Note would be too small for 2 adults, 3 kids plus bikes in the boot; probably the next size up (C-Max size) - if you're looking for petrol versions for mostly short trips, then I would suggest (given the price range) in looking for an older Japanese estate or MPV (mainly Honda, Toyota and Mazdas, in that order) or a slightly newer Ford, which may be less reliable, aren't that bad really on that front (stay away from models with all the gizmos and tatty ones [which probably haven't been looked after]) but can be fixed relatively cheaply everywhere.

For the price, condition will be key. Give whatever you like the look of from a visual inspection a good test-drive, including giving it a bit of welly to see if the engine is ok, and driving on poorly surfaced roads/over road humps in case there are suspension problems (you'll hear odd noises if you do). A FSH, even if its not always at a main dealer (though better) is always a good indicator of a well-cared-for car.

Best of luck.

I've just spent two years with a Skoda Octavia 1.4TSi DSG estate and loved it. Only changing now as I need a 7 seater.

It is a very quick and quite economical petrol estate with all the space and pulling power you will ever need. It is now 5 years old and has only just done 27000 miles so I, like you, needed a petrol rather than a diesel. I have read the comments about the potential problems with the DSG gearbox but can only speak from experience when I say the one on my car was perfect and worked like a dream. The gearbox oil was chnaged by my local main dealer last year as part of the VAG recall.

I've just advertised it for sale on autotrader at a price close to your budget if you are interested :-)

Ford focus would once again fit the bill but again the powershift box is like the DSG and less the smooth at low speeds.

One off the wall is the BMW 5 series which with a few miles on the clock be had a very reasonable prices. Loads of room, great Auto gearbox.Maybe hard to find a petrol but with deisel less than petrol at the pumps now (have a look!) may be a good option. Reliable and cheep to run
