Audi A4 - Longitudinal or transverse engines - Steveieb
Is it better to have a transverse or nort south engine which benefits from equal length drive shafts.

Do newer Audis have transverse engines .?

Can,t see it making much difference.Current Audis can have either configuration dependent on model and engine fitted.

Was always under the impression that longitudinal engines benefitted from haveing equal length drive shafts which makes for better handling and also engine cooling is improved.

Downside possibly the long bonnet profile and forward weight distrubution.

Grateful your views

Many transverse designs have equal length drive shafts - the diff can be offset but use different length extensions.

Even Vauxhall managed that on the bigger-engined Cavaliers.

Cooling is dependent on radiator size and air-flow - generally the modern pressure to reduce fuel consumption compromises the cooling more.

This sentence is somewhat oxym****ic. Shouldn't the ' - ' be 'or' ?

Do the left or right wheels of a land rover tend to lose grip first on a uniformly slippery hill?

Why the asterisks? Is your censor as brainless as an a***nal or Sc***horpe football supporter?

No - on many transverse layouts, the diff is behind the transmission - with one CV joint attached directly to the diff and the other using an extension shaft across the car - this results in equal length drive shafts

The driveshafts to the diffs might be equal length but those from the diffs to the wheels aren't.

My question is, does this make a difference? (no pun intended). I would contend that even if it didn't, with marginally more mechanical weight on the left side, the right wheels would spin first on my hypothetical slope, especially if left hand drive!

I'm afraid that the swear filter is indeed brainless as it's computerised (which is why computers should never be used to make decisions).

We used to have a particularly irritating poster on here who called everybody who disagreed with him a m-o-r-o-n: so I made it a 'swear word'.

Ho - ho! Only i-g-n-o-r-a-m-i resort to insults if they cannot win a debate.

Having had both BMW's & Audi's BMW has always favour rear while drive Audi front.

Audi oddly does favour Longitudinal and front wheel drive. What this amounts to is with bigger engines weight and balance is further foward, past the front wheel of the car, and can rocking which in turn equals wheel spin. This is less notable with newer redesigned gearboxs which in effect are shorter and allow the engine to be mounted slightly further back.
