How can a driver just get away with saying "It was so dark. There was no street lighting. There was a bump and I thought it was an animal."?

I suspect the driver was not paying attention.

Another life lost and written off as just another RTC.

On another note, the Glasgow incident inquiry has uncovered that the driver involved had a known history of blacking out behind the wheel (whilst in charge of a bus) and yet was allowed to continue driving psv's and subsequently six innocent pedestrians killed, not even on a road. Yet again the authorities had prematurely decided no prosecution would be persued. Unbelievable!

I witnessed (in my mirror) a cyclist knocked off their bike. I immediately slewed across the road to block any vehicles coming the other way.

What's wrong with modern motorists?

I have various concerns re the refuse vehicle driver in the Glasgow fatalities.

but

Re the 16 year old girl fatality, ring in the nose is a dead giveaway, generally linked to permenantly worn earphones, with the volume turned up loud.

From direct personal local observations of the students attending a local college of furthur education.

Or, I suppose, what I am trying to say is, why was she attempting to cross the road through fast moving traffic?

And what control measures had she put in place to make her attempted road crossing more survivable?

Pedestrians, in the first instance, have also got a responsibility for their own wellbeing, the Motorist cannot always be held 100% responsible, or perhaps responsible at all?

Infants should be under the charge of a responsible adult, children should be educated or learn to cross a road safely, and with courtsey to all other road users, and one kinda assumes/presumes adults should know better.

Perhaps we need a walking test for pedestrians.

On an unlit 60 mph limit road, should have a) had headlights on and b) driving within the range of illumination. So clearly "without due care and attention.

Whoever knew he had such a history should have informed DVLA and had his licence withdrawn - thye contributed to these deaths and should be charged accordingly.

The present "Justice" system in the UK is not merely flawed it is not fit for purpose in my opinion

Hard to generalise these things. Too many variables. I still remember one horrible incident many years ago. I was driving through a built up area and luckily driving slowly because of parked cars, cycles etc. Suddenly from between two parked cars a child ran straight out. I hit the brakes but then heard that sickening thud. I honestly thought I had hit her full on. I jumped out of the car, went round the front and she was not there. I had actually gone past her and she had run into the side of my car, that was the thud. I felt sick and relieved at the same time. Her parents were there and picked her up and she seemed fine, but I insisted they call an ambulance in case she had concussion. They were apologising to me because she suddenly ran off between the cars and they realised it was not my fault. I was apologising to them for the situation but luckily we all realise it could have been very much worse. I will never forget that incident and it has affected my driving behaviour in built up areas. One of lifes events that turned out alright in the end, but some don't. There but for.....etc etc.

Yes, we don't know what happened. I see pedestrians at night, with dark clothing and no lights. These days they seem to think they have rights, and don't look. Was that the case here? No idea. She might hacpve been blameless, but journalists like a good story.

I once hit a child on a bike, who shot out of a steep drive, hidden from view, into the road, and he went flying. My tyre and wing mirror were wrecked. My wing was dented. The child was unharmed. Fortunately. I was going slowly. I doubt it was my fault. I changed the tyre and repaired the mirror with no help or thanks from the parents. Oh well.

It is a hart stopping moment when a child runs out in front of you. I few years ago I was driving my works lorry fully loaded at 26 tone when a 3 year old ran out in front of me from the pavement I wasn't even doing 20 mph but I remember hitting the breaks and thinking I'd hit the little girl. I got out and she was there standing in front of the lorry I'd luckily just stopped in time.but the mother was shouting at me as if it was my fault for her not keeping an eye on her child. I was shaken up and I had to get my supervisor to take the vehicle back for me. Even though I didn't hit the little girl it made me even more cautious.
