Jeep Grand Cherokee - Auto gearbox ptoblem - Moger
Hello, can anyone help me with a gear changing problem on my 2005/6 grand Cherokee 2.7 auto..gears are often not changing and coming to a junction the gears stay in 4th or 5th. Once you turn off and on ignition the problem goes away... Only for a while but always returns.. What is also relevant is the manual mode and cruise mode doesn't work when in this state. But again all is restored after engine restart...I paid for a 12month warranty but its I surprise that any diagnostic or software upgrade is not covered. Any one got any suggestions please ??!

If it's a diesel engine then pretty sure at this age it will be a Mercedes diesel/gearbox fitted. 5speed box?

If it is an MB engine/5speed gearbox, then it might be low fluid level/in need of a fluid change in the gearbox or a failing conductor plate in the gearbox.

As ever without a diagnostic test you're just guessing, so find a decent garage who can do the diagnosis and work.

Hi .. The 12mth warranty was brought separately after the garage 3mth on expired... But World of warranty won't pay for any diagnostics or software updates!!! Worth bearing that in mind when buying warranties...

For a 9 or 10 year old car, it would only be 6 months under SOGA. Within that time, it would be up to the selling garage to prove that the fault was not 'present or developing' at the time of sale.

However, the OP hasn't said how long they've had the car, only that it came with a 3 month warranty, and that they took out a further 12 months warranty once that had expired.

So, to the OP. When did you buy the car ?

Bought car beginning April, so 4 months really. Tempted to ask for my money back as garage brushed me off with buying a 12month warranty with World of warranty but at the moment they won't pay for any diagnostics or software related issues.

I posted on 'who can fix my car.com' and now 3 garages have placed bids for diagnostics and now all 3 have admitted they don't have correct equipment to do the job so guess I'll have to go to main dealer and pay £115 just for diagnostic which still may not identify problem especially as I have no warning lights on dash.
Anyway thanks for your interest

It would appear that the gearbox is a sealed unit and doesn't require any maintenance etc...

I have had 4 garages offer to do my diagnostics... However, on further discussion ALL of them admit they actually don't have the capability and I will have to go to jeep main dealer and pay £115 which of course is not covered by the 12mth warranty I just paid £350 for!!!! Nightmare

I suggest that you contact/go to a Member of the Federation of Automatic Transmission Engineers (as I have done), who are the auto gearbox experts and can properly diagnose the problem and advise on a solution. These businesses understand auto transmission problems much better than main dealers who only come across them occasionally.

Just to update everyone and for anyone who has a similar problem.

The gear change problem has now been fixed following a great job by crawley auto fit ltd.

A £20 diagnostic revealed error codes P2767 and P2784 which identified the computer circuit board was at fault inside the Mercedes Benz built automatic gearbox.
The faulty board was replaced, cost £250, plus new oil and filters.

Car now running perfectly.

Total cost £634 of which the warranty company agreed to pay £330.
