Citroen ds3 - Timing chains - Chris15

Hi does anyone have any info about issues regarding timing chains on ds3 vti 120bhp petrol. Do all I.6 vti 120bhp have noise and failure problems or is it only the turbo engine . Thanks

I think that you will find this is the same "prince" engine as fitted to many Peugeot and Mini models.Notoriously troublesome with timing chains, tensioners and cam variators.

So it doesn't matter whether it's the turbo engine or not. It happens to both types.
Thanks for your reply

I had this engine (non turbo) in a Pug 207 and it was starting to get the "death rattle" from the timing chain when I chopped it in at 2 years old with 24,000 miles on the clock

Thanks guys , I think I'll give this car a miss so as there are way too many reviews on this subject and there not good. Pity as I liked the look of the car.

Odd why so many of the European makes can't seem to make timing chain designs work, yet the Japanese seem to have the concept licked? It also appears to be more than just the 'long service intervals' than the Euromakes love (timing chains love fresh oil at least annually). sounds like low engineering standards to me.

You have to put into perspective the number of failures against the number produced. It will be a tiny percentage but we only hear about the broken ones. And some of those will be because they have not been mainatined correctly, chipped or thrashed (perhaps all 3).

Take the Ford 1.6 TDCI as an example. read on this forum and you would think there would be dead cars fitted with this engine littering the worlds roads but there are not. Failures have occurred but a vast majority have been fine, our old one is still going strong and its approaching 10 years old now.

If you avoided every car that had a problem reported about it on the internet you would never buy a car.

If you like the car buy it but make sure you get a good warranty that covers timing chains etc (just in case).

Maybe, but a hell of a lot of Japanese cars are chipped - I believe they are the car of choice for most as they appear to be able to 'take' the extra power - maybe that's 'over-engineering', which is fine by me. Maybe some of the European makes need to up their components' stress tollerances, as there appears to be a growing number of faults on their cars these days - maybe it also has to do with them having a much larger range of components/options than the Japanese makes - testing might be more thorough if that was the case as they'd have more time to test them.

If there's anything significant / commonly reported, it'll appear in the car-by-car reviews which you can find on this website (click on reviews at the top of the page). I've had a quick look and can't find anything specific to the problem you mention.
