Polo/Passat rear pads - bertj
I know that a special tool is required to screw in and retract the pistons on the rear disc brakes of some VW Polo's/ Passat's etc. I'd be grateful if someone could tell me whether this tool (which costs about £50) is strictly necessary or is there a DIY method of screwing the pistons in?

haha - I think i know what i'm talking about this time 'cos I did the rear pads on my bora a week last saturday

I used a sykes-pickavant tool for the job, which came from halfords and i'm sure only cost £20 quid.

It's a form of screw and tommy bar arrangement which compresses the piston back in to the cylinder. Apparently, the piston needs to be rotated clockwise as it is pressed back in, and the tool has two teeth that engage on the piston and do this for you.

If you have a decent workshop, you could probably knock something up. However, if either piston is stuck (or seized solid, as mine was) this tool does the job. I was cursing it when I couldn't free the piston at first, but after having taken the caliper off and bolted it down it the garage, the tool did it's job and I can't see any way i'd have got the job doen without it

Mike

Thanks very much for that. The price I was given was from a VW dealer (as you might expect!). I will now zoom down to Halfords.
The whole job will now be very much cheaper than going to the local VW dealer. I owe you an online pint!

Bert

just a thought

on the Golf/Bora, you must replace the caliper bolts with new ones if you taker the calipers off.

If you get your pads from a dealer then they should have new bolts with them, but I don't know if they will if you get them from anywhere else
