Considering the number of years they have been making them now, you would have thought they had reached a certain state of perfection, however this is VAG we are talking about, where profit, hubris matter more than the customer nowadays. It seems to me that in Vag certain things never change, maybe due to turnover of design engineers, software or whatever, it seems the same problems keep being reintroduced over and over again.
Timing chains, tensioners are but some of the many things VAG do not know how to perfect. And just when they seem to get things right, they change suppliers or something and......
As far as dsg boxes go, they have fundamental operational flaws that cant be overcome, e.g. how to control slow speed creep for precise manouvering, hill starting in traffic queues, the wrong preselected gear scenario (roundabouts, sudden changes from braking to acceleration etc . - its never going to be an ideal box, and VAG dont seem interested in thinking about offering real solutions.
The mechatronics (electro hydraulics) reliabilty has improved a bit or at least I dont read about it so often, the latest mod to change back from synthetic to mineral oil to stop electrical insulation breakdown problems seems like a kludge.
If they can give the chinese a 5 year warranty on these boxes then why cant the UK have that too?
If only they would add a lockable torque converter to that dsg box.....
