All VAG auto boxes these days are DSG, and there have been plenty of horror stories, including on here. Go to any VAG group car in the reviews section, and then go to the 'What's good/bad' section.

Considering the number of years they have been making them now, you would have thought they had reached a certain state of perfection, however this is VAG we are talking about, where profit, hubris matter more than the customer nowadays. It seems to me that in Vag certain things never change, maybe due to turnover of design engineers, software or whatever, it seems the same problems keep being reintroduced over and over again.

Timing chains, tensioners are but some of the many things VAG do not know how to perfect. And just when they seem to get things right, they change suppliers or something and......

As far as dsg boxes go, they have fundamental operational flaws that cant be overcome, e.g. how to control slow speed creep for precise manouvering, hill starting in traffic queues, the wrong preselected gear scenario (roundabouts, sudden changes from braking to acceleration etc . - its never going to be an ideal box, and VAG dont seem interested in thinking about offering real solutions.

The mechatronics (electro hydraulics) reliabilty has improved a bit or at least I dont read about it so often, the latest mod to change back from synthetic to mineral oil to stop electrical insulation breakdown problems seems like a kludge.

If they can give the chinese a 5 year warranty on these boxes then why cant the UK have that too?

If only they would add a lockable torque converter to that dsg box.....

I suspect because that would negatively affect things like CO2, government published MPG figures etc.

Must admit, I thought the wet clutch DSG boxes used on the bigger petrol and diesel engines were OK and that it was the dry clutch systems on the 1.2/1.4 models which were jerky and caused reliability problems?

A lockable torgue convert would work fine but you would need two and the cost, weight and size would make it a none runner. I have the ford power shift which much like the DSG is less than smooth compared to a Toegue converter design, But quick and eco of fuel, I get better mpg than many of my friends with manual boxs.

BMW have managed sort this type of gearbox, so hopefully VAG will be able to also.

Having said that I not aware of any issues with newer dry plate box thu

The torque converter would bolt on the flywheel, where they normally live, only one required.

Cant speak for recent reliability but in terms of smothness I was incredibly impresses with the dry cluch DSG which I tried on a brand new Audi A1 1.4 TFSi recently. It really was as smooth as my BMW ZF 6 speed and indeed changes at speed were smoother still. I was prepared for all sorts of pulling away issues and jerks etc but even with provocation it retained composure totally. I am really impressed and wouldn't hesitate to get a DSG if I was going VAG group for my next vehicle (which I might).

Trying one out and living with one are two different things. (Think women)

Ask any delivery driver what he thinks and how he manages/struggles to get them onto the top deck of his transporter.

Not being a delivery driver gives me the perspective of driving one in routine circumstances. Four years of ownership I suppose gives me some sort of excuse for voicing an opinion. And, despite all the naysayers and detractors suggesting jerky take up and changes etc etc I'm afraid I'm inclined to side with dpadmore with regard to the way it drives. The reliability issues are, for better or worse, another subject which I and countless others have spoken about...but the way it goes is, on the whole, OK with me. Nothing's perfect and the DSG is no exception but don't knock it unless you've had some experience with it. If after a substantial time with it you still don't like it then so be it ...that's fair enough - we'd agree to differ.
