No surprise. Knowing a former very senior employee of the company, it is clear that they operated on the edge of moral probity.

Excellent news, they are an awful sales company, the worst of the worst. Good riddance.

Does this reflect a broader weakness in the current economics of the car supermarket businesses? Next one to fail?

I don't believe it does.

They where unique in selling cars at vastly inflated prices, often more expensive 3 years old than buying pre-reg or new, but offering finance to every man and his dog at very uncompetitive rates.

They prayed on the poor and vulnerable who lacked the sense to realise the vehicle prices where extortionate but as they would guarantee anybody finance no matter what their credit rating and/or current financial circumstances where, to many people they where the only option despite the further sting of a high APR rate.

Administrators Grant Thornton said the group had suffered from "poor market reputation, lack of investment, a high cost base, expensive loan note financing and an insolvent balance sheet".

They were bought by a VC firm about 18 months ago from the original owners (the men who founded it, and also set up WeBuyAnyCar).

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a pre-pack administration job to wash away the debt and start again under a new company banner.

Can't say I'm particularly sorry. I am sorry that people are going to be losing their jobs, but that's all.

I went there once and, to be honest, I couldn't get out of there quick enough. I only went there to have a look round but all they wanted to do was sell me finance! When I explained that I never have and never will borrow money to buy cars they weren't the least bit interested in me.

I did, eventually, get to look at their cars. Very poorly prepared, high mileages and high prices; all things you don't want when buying a car. I wished I hadn't bothered going there.

I seem to remember they used to be called something else.

I have no personal experience of this outfit, though I have bought a couple of cars in Rochdale over the years. I think this is a very likely scenario from Craig, judging from the 'poor market reputation', which has to be earned of course.

This company has been on the market since February and no one has bitten, suggesting no pre pack in the wings.

Stock is being sent off site which also suggests no one is willing to take it over. The car auctions will be very busy in the next few weeks.

Well VC says it all. Second hand car market is really non existant. It's really a car finiance operation which happens to though in a car.

I recently puchased a car from a dealer and when I sad I pay cash no credit, suddenly eyes glazed over. I one car the dealer claim they made a cockup and the car on the forecourt had already been sold.

Strange thing to me it was the best value car on the internet, a lost leader?

I've also visited dealers recently.

I never say how I am going to pay until I have discussed initial figures - once I am happy on a price I discuss payment options. It is too easy for the actual cost to be lost in 'affordability', 'cost per month' etc - which is exactly how Carcraft worked. £50 a week for 5 years sounds much more affordable than £5,000 plus a huge APR.

As of yet spending my own money which is making very little is still cheaper than borrowing it from dealers at circa 10%.
