I live in Thanet South - it's one of the most marginal seats in the country with a 3 way split, Conservative, Labour and UKIP (Nigel Farage)

Suggestions on a postcard for questions when they come knocking on the front door seeking my vote .... (here are a few starter ideas)

80 mph on motorways (at least a trial, M2 would be good as it has a mix of 4,3 and 2 lane sections as well as level and hilly sections)

Better road maintence (probably a prime target under spend restrictions)

No widescale rolling out of road tolls

No stealth speed cameras

New Thames river crossing linking Sheerness to Canvey Island (or thereabouts)

Re-open Manston Airport

Consistant nationawide approach to speed enforcement, so the variations like North Wales and Durham don't exist

Alternative to 'Operation Stack' (closure of M20 into a lorry park whenever there are delays on trains / ferries to France)

Single place to pay existing road tolls - anyone who pays the London Congestion Charge and the Dart Charge (Dartford Crossing Toll) will know they may share the same 'C' road sign but cannot be paid on the same website

Whilst motorists will always be the cashcow for governments I would like to see some logical thought behind some policies.

1) Scrap road tax, its in the fuel already

2) Speed cameras and speed humps etc should be placed where they're needed, not for profit or a councillors whim

3) More police on the road. I don't have a good word to say about plod generally but I accept that more traffic police is the way to control bad driving etc, not the mindless use of cameras.

4) Scrap tolls on all tunnels/bridges. Ridiculous money grabbing swines like the tyne tunnel should be a thing of the past

5) Maybe fill in a pothole occasionally.

6) Instead of building more and more roads, how about looking at the issues - in many cases poor traffic management is the cause of congestion. Traffic lights on roundabouts, badly designed junctions and so on.

I'm sure I could think of a few more, but the vein in my forehead is starting to throb....

Motoring issues aren't a major topic for me as far as this election goes. The situation in our constituency means that my vote will be tactical. But....

I'd support road tax being abolished and fuel duty being raised to recoup the shortfall.

Cars should be taxed not just on emissions but on fuel consumption and maybe by size too, as smaller cars take up less space in cities.

Greater use should be made of disqualification as a punishent, with a 'three strikes and you're out' rule - i.e. if you're disqualified from driving for a third time it's permanent, for life.

This assumes I beleive they will honour a promise. I don't, so the question is academic.

What I do think is they should invest in technology more. Already they have ways to check if someone has valid MOT (if needed) and insurance. Automatic checks like this should help remove the non compliant parasites. Reducing paperwork for coppers, using automation, to free up their time.

But the problem is they all promise the earth, but really we are constrained because we are spending more than we earn, which cannot continue. Something must give.
