Which satnav (under £100) gives the best advance lane guidance, clear spoken instructions and in good time ?

People's personal experience valued. Thanks.

Personally I've bought some cheaper Ebay types over the last few years. They all seem to run MioMaps which is great, and at around £30 for a 5" screen version its cheaper to buy a new unit every few years than go for lifetime updates etc.

Never had any complaints about the lane guidance and the unit I've got now has been used effectively several times in the last year.

Thanks Snakey - I'll have a look now.

There is a 5 inch Garmin available for about £80 which includes free lifetime map updates - search Amazon uk.

Swapped between Garmin and TomTom over the years. Find the mapping quality is similar; TomTom does better basic routes; Garmin with "photorealistic" junction views is better on unfamilar motorways.

If you like planning your journeys ahead of time on a PC; exploring different variations, etc., Garmin with its Base Camp/Mapsource software is a winner.

Garmin has more POIs (point of interest) in its database. Find Garmin's updating process is less "clunky" than TomTom's.

Worthwhile looking in the "warehouse deals" section of Amazon websites - there are some excellent "Like New" bargains

Thank you everyone for these extremely helpful posts.

Think I will probably go for a Garmin.

Thanks again - much appreciated

I have had both TomTom and Garmin. The TomTom is old now but I liked the interface better. Not a big deal though, you soon get used to them.

The most recently purchased is a Garmin 5", 2597LMT which is still on Amazon at £117. It has Europe maps, lifetime map updates, and lifetime traffic, bluetooth hands free, voice control and other features I never use!

It's predecessor had bluetooth but it wasn't great, and I haven't tried it on this one. Traffic is a mixed blessing - on a couple of occasions it has routed us round quite severe hold-ups, but its weakness (common to all to a degree) is that not all roads are covered - so you can be re-routed around a few minutes hold up onto a road that is actually more congested but not covered.

When I have wanted a new one (herself likes one too, the TomTom and the newest Garmin were for her) I tend to make the decision based on which has the lowest proportion of one star reviews on Amazon! They give an indication of any epidemic problems and the rate of DOAs. Tom Tom seemed to have a spate of early battery failure; not sure if that is current.

Garmin map updates are 3-monthly. Worth having free ones now I think. The latest Garmin also handles multiple via points which I find useful as a way of forcing a chosen route.

A lot of people are using smart phones now, including my daughter who uses Waze on hers, www.waze.com/, and finds it adequate.

There was a time whwn Garmin map updates were free, but TomTom made you pay. Anyone know if that's still the case?

AFAIK at the moment, some Garmin products come with free updates which TonTom has had to offer to compete.

As far as the hardware goes, Garmin stuff is tougher and better put together, for instance I have a TT which is an absolute b*gger to get the power plug into the socket, whereas my Garmin Zumo 220 has the same type of plug and socket and is dead easy, gets used on motorcycles and in cars and is mostly satisfactory, the best bit is that it doesn't suffer a fit of the sulks like the TT does when it refuses to offer a sensible route.

I'm not confident in TT's updates. the first and last time we did it it rendered the thing unable to pick up satellites so back it went to TT for warranty repair in the netherlands and came back with a battery that lasts all of 10 minutes.

TomTom didn't offer me free updates. I paid for 12 months (4 Maps) and got a further 6 months free. This was this month

Depends on the TomTom - a lot of them now do come with free map updates for 'the lifetime of the device'
