Volkswagen Polo IV - 1.4 Petrol engine - reliable? - csgmart

I'm thinking about my next upgrade (from current Polo 2001).

Considering another Polo (my previous 3 Polos have been utterly reliable) in the newer shape - around 2008/9 I expect.

Will stick with the petrol as I don't do enough to justify diesel and want to avoid expensive bills anyway.

Is the 1.4 petrol engine reliable? I know that VW did a 3 cyl petrol engine but I believe that was the 1.2 engine which had lots of issues?

Any comments on this particular engine appreciated.

There are a least 2 versions of the 1.4 in the current shape and there have been / is 3 versions of the 1.2. There are tales of woe around most VW engines, possibly because of the numbers sold. Which variant are you considering?

Thanks. Not sure on the engine variant - but the lower power version. For my current Polo the 1.4 engine came as a 60hp engine or 75hp (which I think had 2 cams and more valves). Not sure if these were carried through on the next generation Polo but if they were I would go for the more simpler version.

Most 1.4 petrol engines should be OK except for the short-lived version that I think was both turbocharged and supercharged.
