The obvious first thing to check is has the fuel filter been renewed recently?

This maybe a broken wire for the stop solenoid on the fuel pump.

The stop solenoid is inaccessible on these vehicles as an anti-theft measure. Bosch stop solenoids do not generally give any trouble.

Remove the air cleaner assembly. Find the fuel hose which connects the primer bulb to the fuel filter head. Adjacent to the point where the pipe meets the filter head, on its rear face is a white nylon "plug" held by a star clip.

Using a mirror to observe, pressurise the fuel system with the primer, whilst observing the nylon "plug". Any fuel leakage here, however slight, will cause this problem.

The reason is that this point in the system is normally under negative pressure as the transfer pump attempts to pull fuel from the tank. Air leakage at the "plug" will give the symptoms you are experiencing. This is due to air bubbles in the fuel inlet to the pump.

In fact, the "plug" is a thermo valve which routes fuel to a hot or a cold area of the filter head as required. It's not available from PSA as a separate part. The "O" ring will be hard and flattened, causing the leak.

Ideally, release the clip and change the "O" ring. In practice, you may break the valve assembly as the clip is obstructive and the plastic is age-hardened.

To replace a broken valve, obtain a nylon 1/2" BSP plug (used to blank unused ports on domestic radiators) and apply plenty of PTFE tape to the threads. This will then be a good press fit into the hole.

With correctly specified Winter fuel, the fuel heating is not essential on this engine. Fully acceptable performance in UK conditions can be obtained without it.

Have you enquired for this at Nissan? as they used the TUD5 engine in the Micra.
