Hi all,

This morning I sold the Mondeo (MK4 tit x) privately. Over the past 5 years it's been a great car but I fancy a change. I was tempted by the Civic Tourer SR (diesel) - like the looks, drives ok, frugal, but it just felt a little cramped inside passenger wise.

Just been to look at a Qashaqi (1.5 DCI) . Like the driving position, lively pick up when moving though the gears, frugal and feels roomy inside (could be that panoramic roof I suppose). I was after the Tekna model but I'm not sure my money (£19k cash) will stretch that far - the dealer didn't seem to think so.

Apart from autoTrader and ebay, any other suggestions where I might find one ?

Any other comments of the Qashqai ?

John

Nothing specifically about Qashqai, but my car has a panoramic roof and I'm really not sure what they are for. You do have the choice of 'opening' it or closing the blind, but it's really only a greenhouse, with the accompanying heating effect - so you need the a/c. I can't believe it cheapens the building cost, and replacing if it ever became necessary boggles the mind. Is it only the 'roomy' effect ?

Beware that most insurance companies will not cover a panoramic roof under glass/window cover. Cost a fortune to replace and I've heard tales on some makes/models they crack easily usually heat/frost related if fitted poorly at the factory, with manufacturers excluding from warranty.

I cant see the panoramic roof being an option I could live with. Considering my small (factory fitted) electric sunroof is unbearable when not covered - desperately hot under sun, and freezing in winter just like a conservatory. Only used rarely e.g. tilted up to give the dog air when parked.

In our company we have two Qashqais; the last of the old models and a new model, both Tekna with the 1.6Dci engine. We thought the old model was good (and it is) but the new model is superb. You cannot buy the new model in Tekna with the 1.5dCi but friends who have the 1.5dCi say the spec is very good and of course the basic car is the same.

The new model has a very clear dashboard, excellent driving position, spacious interior and my member of staff who drives it (25,000 miles pa) is just over the moon.

I had a panoramic roof in my old S-Max. It was fine but sometimes there was too much light to see the central screen properly.

I suspect my comments aren't going to help much but they are at least intended to !

We've had two of the "old" Qashqais, my wife still has the second one. At many levels they have both proven to be excellent cars. Comfortable to drive, very reliable, do what they say on the tin. If she wanted one of the new ones sometime I'd not hesitate to buy another and if my needs were adequately met by one I'd not feel in any way worried about choosing one for my purposes either.

"My" one was a "tekna" which came with the panoramic roof, leather and all manner of other twiddly bits, hers is a "Visia" which doesn't.

In some ways, perhaps oddly, I feel the more basic car is preferable. I'm not keen on automated everything and at a practical level it's cheaper to buy, insure and tyre.

However, and this is very much about personal tastes and preferences, the Mondeo you have just sold is a much nicer drive. My first QQ replaced a Mondeo estate and while the Nissan certainly looked more of the moment in styling terms it simply didn't hold a candle to the Ford as a driver's car.

The only way I can summarise it for you is that with some cars I've had ( the Mondeo included ) I'd find an excuse to drive it on a sunny morning just for the pleasure of the journey, with the Nissans, I only found myself using them if I needed to.

Kind of white goods cars if that makes sense?

Are rear seat passengers a factor here? My only experience of the previous QQ was to sit in the back of one. I was surprised at how claustrophobic it felt, even with light coming through the panoramic roof.

Don't think I've ever sat in the back of one of ours. Quite bouncy though as an observation. My dog doesn't like travelling in Qqs, makes him car sick. He's fine in my EClass estate though. Little snob!

Our dog much prefers our C class estate to the C max - I think it's because there are decent side windows in a proper estate car for them to look out of. Sorry you've had a bad experience with your C max OP, we've been really happy with ours, but you pay your money and make your choice, so if you fancy a Scenic... back on topic now.

Paul - I think this comment belongs in the 'Renault Scenic buying advice' thread! Unfortunately although I can move whole threads I can't move a single post to another thread.

Nissan are promising a more powerful 1.6 petrol engine for the QQ at some point. But it'll still have that silly kicked-up styling aft of the rear doors meaning that you can't see out properly.

Panoramic sunroofs have becoem popular options on cars, as much a the demise of the opening sunroof. I really don't know why, I've had an opening sunroof almost all my driving life, and would not want to be without it. So much so that if my next car does not have a factory fit option I'd be fitting a Webasto aftermarket sunroof.

As for a new QQ, trawl the brokers - see if they have any on offer, or look for a nearly new ex-dem car, the dealer may not be so happy but you might!

We leased our new Qashqai and the deals from reputable people were far superior to those from Nissan dealers.

Daughter in law bought a second hand car recently, local Nissan Dealer (Evan Halshaw) told her categorically "We don't do discount, madam." We don't have to because our prices are so competitive."

She then went and paid the asking price!! And ended up paying extra for road tax, hpi check and some other things too. Then she contacted me when they refused to produce evidence of the full service history. The tripe that the salesmen came out with is too tedious to repeat here.

Thanks to all for the replies so far. The mondeo has been a good servant, but now my needs are different and I was quite taken by the Qashqai.

Just need to decide between petrol and diesel and wished there were more Gun Metal Grey used QQs to choose from - seems to be loads of black ones

Just an update... Put a deposit on a 2014 (64) 1.5 Tekna up in the Wolverhampton (I'm in Essex). Travel up to collect Friday.

Thanks. Appreciate your comments. The sicky feeling does worry me a little, but I'll not mentioned it to those who sit in the back, just note the colour on their faces from time to time...

Probably be fine unless they have floppy ears and sweat through their tongues.

In general Qashiqai is good to drive, I had Qashiqai 360 for 2 years, like the spare space inside around the seats and a good reasonable size for carrying stuff for sports gym things like that; also like the panoramic roof, didn't have problems with it at all, it's nice to have it open when it's a sunny day, feel the air from inside.

Im not a fan but you cant deny the popularity of the Qashqai, everyone I know who has owned a Qashqai has found the experience to be positive.

Likewise, it holds its value well.

They are friendly sorts of cars. If that's possible. Inoffensive, comfortable, cover most bases. Not unpleasant to behold. Just not all that exciting to drive. But that's not everything in the real world.

I'd happily have another and my wife likes hers. Nothing much to dislike in truth.

If this is for the new model make sure you find the steering setting in the menus and change it to sport otherwise the steering is too light.

Well I purchased the said car and after a couple of weeks of ownership I'm happy with what I got. Agreed it's perhaps not the most exciting car to drive, but it's comfortable and so far economical.

The car itself was in poor condition considering it's only 6/7 months old. Obviously never seen a bucket of soapy water in that time, but I can see through all that and realised for the money I got a decent deal. Software/firmware for the radio needs updating and that's booked in with my local dealer for a weeks time.

Plus point is the garage serviced the car so don't have to worry about that for another 12 months. The ride can be a little bouncy and I'm conscious of that when there are passengers in the back (car sickness)
