Changing the car in 10 days; existing insurance cancelled wef 30 March; MOT and Tax not due til May. However went to give notice of SORN wef 30 March but no; the website assumes with immediate effect and backdates the SORN to 1 =st of the month. Phone call to DVLA gets response that the only option is to re-tax, but of course no refund for existing month so it is in fact still taxed!

SORN becomes active on the day you declare it. This has been common knowledge for years evn with the old paper system.

Your car is now not taxed thus you cannot use it on the road unless you re-tax it. If you use it and get caught by a camera of stopped by the police your car will probably be impounded and a fine and back tax will need to be paid.
