Does anyone know how difficult it is to fit one of these to an up and over garage door? I'll have all the tools needed.

I got one fitted for an elderly aunt a couple of years ago. It wasn't expensive but the fitter wanted to fit new springs pointing out the door was in poor condition and would not guarantee the work. In the end though we removed the side door at the side of the up and over door and fitted a larger ip and over door and hey presto she stopped scraping her car going in and out.

Having all the tools is a bit different to being competent in their use. I know plenty of people with all the gear, but no idea.

Saying that, if you are reasonably competent at things DIY/mechanical, then it isn't particularly difficult. A lot easier as a 2 person job though.

Cheers all. I'm an electrician, although not a mechanical engineer. I'll get a willing assistant if I try to fit it myself.

I fitted a Bosch (now Somfy) one a few years ago. Very straightforward with the only tools required being a drill and screwdriver.

Thanks for that Brit. Useful to know a decent manufacturer for DIY installs

I was a self employed electrician for a few years - fitted quite a few of various makes. Frankly it's quite easy and money for old rope.

Don't devalue yourself, Cyd. Anything's quite easy when you know how, like playing a piano piece by Chopin or making a Christmas cake - without the music or recipe.

Charging someone a three figure sum for emptying and refilling a sump with oil, oiling a few hinges, topping up a windscreen washer and changing a few spark plugs and perhaps the brake pads even though there may be at least 3mm wear left on them - now THAT'S money for old rope.

You are an electrician with skills in handling tools so you will be able to do that easily. But, read the instructions thoroughly first.

There is an amusing TV advertisement where a child mistakenly uses the remote control for Daddy's car to try and get his toy car to move. Result, frustrated little boy and big dints in the bonnet of Daddy's car. The moral, keep the remote somewhere where the kids can't get at it.

It is not about having all the tools needed, but if you are comfortable working around heavy machinery like cars and are a regular do-it-yourself type of person, who understands how it functions and are familiar with the potential hazards, then feel free to do it. Otherwise, call an experienced technician who will guarantee a professionally done job.
