Are BMW 1 Series any good? They seem a bit bland and not that good on spec. Why are they so expensive? They do look good though!

Par of the expense comes from the badge on the front.

I'm not sure what you mean by them being bland but look good? Do you mean the interior is bland?

They're expensive because they're BMW's so it's a very well made car. The interior is typical German. Functional and grey. It's the only rear drive car in its class, but for the money I'd look at a slightly older 3 series.

Had a 118D for 5 1/2 years. It was comfortable, well equipped, economical and reliable. Servicing was cheap even at a BMW dealer and when I PX'd it we got a great return compared to other brands of the same age.

Would have another without hesitation.

I've not driven a 1 but I have tried the mechanically similar 220i coupé, which I liked very much. Despite the M Sport suspension and 18in wheels it rode very nicely - firm but controlled and never jiggly - and the sports front seats are superb, well worth insisting on. I like the simplicity and clarity of the interior - contrast with the hideous fussiness of current Mercedes - although it's much nicer if it's not all black. There's plenty of room for two, and the view out is good in all directions. Decent boot too, for what's really a small saloon.

The 1 is built on a shorter wheelbase, though, which means the rear seats are purely ornamental; even my 11yo son struggled to fit behind the passenger seat. Behind the driver's seat set for me, you couldn't even see the floor, never mind get feet to it. Boot is OK, but still smaller than the one in the coupé.

Try before you buy - I nearly bought one a couple of years ago, but I found the driving position very odd as it felt like your clutch leg was 'offset'

Probably OK if you're driving around a track, but a right pain in traffic.

Same with the 3-series, the pedal offset on manual gearbox cars feels very odd. One might get used to it over time, however

Only if you buy a manual, though, and I'm not sure why you would; the 8-speed auto is that good.
