company cars good or bad? - TopScot

just wondering people's opinions on buying cars that are ex fleet/company?

The advantage of this type of car is that the servicing will have been done as the manufacturer recommends and should not have been skimped upon.

Traditionally people would say that the cars get thrashed, but nowadays I don't think you can really do this and keep your licence intact.

I now have a company car and if anything needs sorting it goes straight back to the main dealer for fixing. I also have previously purchased an ex company car (Ford Focus) at auction and had no problems at all with it.

Depending upon which manufacturer, you could still have a couple of years warranty left on a 3 year old car if you get one with reasonable mileage.

Frankly it's a lottery, as it depends on who drove the car when it was company owned.

I drove company cars from 1989 to 2006 and mine were in demand at the end of the lease because I looked after them, drove with mechanical sympathy, and always had them serviced on the button.

Conversely we had some BMW 3 series coupes (and saloons) which after 3 years with the Sales Account Managers were absolutely knackered. Other abused vehicles I particularly remember on the fleet were a Merc C180, a Volvo V70 and a couple of Omegas.

There were also some ladies in the Marketing department (my department) who had Audi A4s. They put oil in the engine only when the red warning light came on. They would normally forget to have them serviced on time as hey, who has time to book them in, drive to the garage and arrange a lift or a replacement car?

Caveat emptor indeed......

Clocking is my main concern if buying ex fleet/company cars.

Would always depend on whether you are buying as an approved used car through an approved main dealer or not. Without any proof of history and manufactureres warranty you are chancing it. With the ever increasing problems with modern Diesel engined cars and their extended servicing periods would not even consider a diesel.

I have fortunately been driving company cars for thirty one years.

Mine have all been thoroughly spoilt whilst I was responsible for them. Like previous posters , serviced when due. Some of these were purchased by collegues and friends went on to give many years reliable service for them, even though they had covered 100,000 plus miles when brought. Most people that had them only did 5-6,000 miles a year, so they proved a good buy.

Regular servicing seems to be the key.

Agreed, and bit of care and mechanical sympathy and the ability/nous/common sense to lift the bonnet every week and just check the oil and then do something about it should it need some....judging by the few company cars i've driven whilst in company use this would appear to be far above the capability of some users.

Your right GB. I could tell many horror stories of abused company cars. None of mine I may hasten to add.

However, if you are provided with a car for your job, then in my opinion the least you can do is look after it and carry out the necessary basic checks that it requires on a weekly basis.

I bought a two-year-old, 30,000-mile ex-company car in 2004. After ten years and 110,000 more miles I still have it. Admittedly it was my former company car, but I had been required to sign up to quite an onerous set of rules about care and maintenance, and similar conditions have applied to all the company car schemes I've known about.

I think the usual guidance on age and condition applies here too. I am at last looking to replace the old thing this year, probably with something 2-3 years old. I'd rather have something well (but not over-) used than some pensioner's over-polished and under-driven 8,000-mile diesel. Machines generally prefer to be used.

Company cars are like Motability cars. Its a lottery what you get as some people will look after them as if it was their own, and some people treat like a mobile skip.

I've seen mint ex-company cars and properly abused ones. Mechanically they can be ok but the interior can be revealing - look for scratches and marks on the plastic surfaces and headlining etc.

Even private buys you get the same problem - some people look after their cars and others just don't care.

True but you get the chance to speak to the owner on the phone, then if each of you pass that test you get to meet face to face.

Plus with a private sale you get to see how its been looked after by the owner driver, not some sales dude flogging one of dozens of ex lease that have all been through a professional sales prep valet designed to camouflage the battle scars for a week.

Bad choice of words on my behalf. When I said private I was meaning non company/mobility cars you get from a dealer rather than private buys like you said.

Agree, but with company and motability the servicing can generally be assumed to have been done correctly, not necessarily with a privately owned car - hence the interior condition is an indicator

I think it’s a lottery. My neighbour has one, it’s Ford C-Max. The car needs new clutch every year due to her style of driving. It had never been washed/cleaned internally/externally during her ownership. Minor scuff all over the places. She doesn’t care. Absolutely ‘Zero’ sympathy. However, the car’s been serviced annually.
