Informed yesterday by e-mail that my 330 is finally for the chop.
Leasing company replacing it with a 530d (the new 200bhp, this being the only compensation) by the first week in March. I have never been sadder about the departure of a car.

Wow - At last !
Still keen to discuss about potential purchase of this car.
Can you provide current status please & price if possible ?
(Mileage, what money needs to be spent now - Service/tyres etc)
What year/month & reg?Is BMW warranty still active ?Can I extend?
Is car still A1 condition?
PS - 200bhp 530d ?? - I thought the new lump was 215bhp?
Thanks in advance for your assistance with this.

I think when you get used to your new motor, you will be well pleased, particularly if you are getting the new engine, which has 204bhp (against 184bhp for the 330d) and more importantly 410Nm of torque from just 1500 rpm. In addition the ride quality on the 530 is in a different league to the 330 and it is every bit as chuckable through the twisty bits. Do not despair, as you will not be disappointed !!!

Seems to be some doubt about the bhp of the new 3 litre. I thought it was 200bhp. Upon checking in BMW Magazine, which plopped ont he doormat thi morning, it quotes 193bhp over 184 for the original. Performance figs for the 5 seem very close to the 3. My car should be a manual Sport, again in silver.
The 330d now has 68k and is three years old in March. It was originally due to be replaced nearly 8 months ago but has been a series of hicups (I ain't complaining by the way.) as previously stated its an SE manual with Sat Nav. I am uncertain of the reg plate (a late 2000 W or an early 2000 X) as it has been on personal plates from the day I first saw it.
Its just been for a "Major" and had new front tyres in October. The rears have been on since late January. The car has been delaer serviced at no expense spared, being a company car. There are no issues with the car, it drives better than ever, the only question mark is the early steering rack which is considered light. The latest version I borrowed from the dealer a few weeks ago is much better. Bodywork is clean, minor chipping., a very slight crack in a door mirror, which wasn't picked up at the last service or happened since.
They wanted 18k for it the last time I checked last Autumn....I will task admin next Monday to find out what they want now. I won't buy it love it as I do, simply 'cos SWMBO would move out if another car appeared in the stable. My brother i/l may be interested but he is currently, how can I say, dodging camels at 50 feet...
I think that it is possible to extend the BMW warranty, although
because of the contract I am uncertain. The car has been faultless and uses only a little oil.

doh...checked the V5 its 1st March 2000, that makes it an X.
|

No, 01/03/00 makes it a very early W.

3 litre diesel in the 5
184 bhp until Y plates, then 193bhp. This has now been remapped (chipped or whatever BMW do) and will\soon be 204bhp. I believe that the 3 series will also get the 204bhp version.
Is there any differnece or is all marketing?

Auto Express road tested the new 204bhp engine in the new 330Cd coupe this week , (that unfortunately will not be available in the U.K. until April 2004), and rated the driving experience very close to the M3 for thrills per mile, with that 410Nm of torque available from just 1500rpm.

Whats it worth ?
330d SE manual,silver,W,(03/00)fully loaded+nav,68k,fbmwsh.
£16k ??
No doubt leasing company will want more !

I am expecting a new 204 bhp 330D Touring at the end of next month. Early reports suggest a very rapid/economical car. Will replace very disappointing Saab 93 Tid. Never loked it over the last 3 years despite being a Saab fan. Why are you so sad to see the 330 D go Pugugly?
|
dodo,
Simply because its the best I've ever "owned". I owned my first beemer many years ago (second hand 323 then) and this is the ninth in line, my first oil burner, and by far the best. The car has performed beyond all expectations, I honestly cannot expect the next one to be an improvement. I get, sadly, very attached to my motors - apart from the SWMBO's Disco of course.

|
This is very encouraging. The reason I chose the BMW was because of the positive 3 years we had with my wife's 96 325 TDS touring - definitely the best car we have ever owned - and that includes Volvo Saab Mercedes Audi VW and second best Skoda (new 110 Tdi Octavia estate in 2000). Jury is still out Galaxy Tdi 115 but very encouraging. let us know how the 530 performs!
|
Right! I'm chipping the Alfa (Sportwagon 2.4JTD) to 175bhp and seeing if that gives me the beemer grin.
Probably won't, but £500 for 45bhp isn't to be sniffed at.
secretly lusting for PU's cast-off

Great but is it coming in RHD? Will it fit on to our rural roads and how much will it be? Owned a very problematic C220 cdi for a couple of years. Will wait and see...

You want a quick diesel check out the brief test of the Merc E400CDI in the W211 E Class estates road test on this site. Blows that BMW into the weeds. HJ
Mmmm... Lovely! Read the review with a splatter guard over my keyboard to protect it from the drooling. Has to go on the list for a top used buy when I dispose of the Alfa in 3 years or so.

330d gets the 204bhp engine from next month.
Current 530d has the 193bhp engine.
New shape 5 series 530d (due Autumn 2003) gets 218bhp.
Don't think the 204bhp engine will go in the current 5 series when it's due to be replaced in 6 months' time.
|
On the 530d, i know the engine was remapped from 184bhp to 193bhp
sometime during 2001 (Y plate onwards it seems) - But, is their any way of physically checking ? Also, can you upgrade/remap a pre-2001 car to 193bhp?
|
Price Quoted for a cash deal on this car is 16.5k. The Warranty should be extendable thru BMW delership for a price.
SWMBO has sent an e-mail to BiL to give him first refusal. Should have a reply in due course.
|
|
The BMW warranty is extendable up to 100k,(i.e. can be taken out at 99,999 miles for a further 12 months), providing the vehicle has a full BMWSH. The cost however is £650 per annum, which does include an insurance cover for any component that would lead to an M.O.T. failure (including catalyst).
|
|
BiL's offer was accepted by the lease company today. He is in the Mid East at the moment, but the transfer will take place on Monday, when I collect my new 530d....sad but true.
|
Pugugly - Thanks for the prompt update.
16.5k was certainly v.tempting and would have prompted a much closer look, if BiL has decided against.
Please keep us posted on the 530d.
Very keen to hear about the comparison.
My search for BMW diesel continues.....

|
BiL called around today - he's been home from the Gulf since a month or more and has been revelling in my ex-motor. Went for a spin in it just as I remember it, fast frugal and well screwed together. Still wished I'd kept it.

I have a 2000x 530d 184bhp and have asked BMW if they could remap to the 193bhp and they said no!
I believe that the new generation 3.0d is a differnet engine rather than just a remap as the CC has dropped from 2996 to 2993
