Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec MK6 - Problem with Fiesta Steering - Tanfies2

My Ford Fiesta Mk6 has always had a problem with its steering. Hard to explain, but the closest I’ve found to this symptoms online is “Tramlining”? Quite common with this model, especially Fords Fiesta ST’s.

Hard to explain, and it’s really difficult to get an exact diagnosis, but a year later after trying different things and replacing certain parts, it’s still there.

I will try to explain in the most simplest terms possible, in the hope that someone can help, or pinpoint the actual problem.

1) 1) The car drives in a straight line on even roads such as motorways and doesn’t pull to one side, or when breaking.

2) 2) On uneven roads, such as back streets, lanes, the front wheels seem to pick up every imperfection such as cracks, pot holes, ruts, cats eyes, which causes the steering wheel to twitch violently from side to side. When breaking, the car will pull in the direction of those imperfections.

3) 3) When accelerating and catching things in the road such as white lines, the steering flicks off to either side as if it’s skating on ice.

My Fiesta has standard alloys, standard size tyres, inflated to the correct tyre pressures. The tracking and balancing has been done twice, and I have replaced parts such as shocks, track rod ends, steering rack, tyres etc. My mechanic also seems to think that everything else is tight all the way up to the steering column.

Some people say that I’m over reacting and that it’s only a Fiesta, but something doesn’t quite add up. I’ve not had this with other cars, and although they all seem to pick up imperfections in the road, most drive through them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest getting the lower wishbones checked if they haven't been checked already. Wear here could certainly cause the problems described.

When you say you've got 'standard alloys' I have a suspicion that you mean the 16" wheels with the 45 profile tyres, which in my humble opinion, whilst they look good in a showroom, should not be used on our pothole-ridden roads. But that's me.

I had the same 'tramlining' problems on one of the last Mini Coopers many years ago.. the model with the wide 12" wheels (and shorter steering rack to stop the wheels fouling the arches). The tyres as fitted gave a horrendous ride - hard and quite vicious 'tramlining'. I seem to remember that the tyres were Dunlop 'Sport' type either 2 or 3. When it came to replacing the front tyres, I bought Dunlop again, but the dealer sourced the other type to what had been on, so if the originals were 'Sport 2' he fitted 'Sport 3' - or vice-versa. The ride was transformed! No more tramlining! A nice, comfortable ride! The new tyres were totally different to the old ones!

So, I would say that your problem lies entirely with the tyres, and it's a problem which you simply don't encounter with normal profile tyres, but when you get down to wide, low profile tyres on big rims, it gets critical.

Try borrowing a set of 15" wheels (and tyres, of course) - or even 14" off a Fiesta saloon or van and go for a short drive 'round on 'em. Methinks you'll see that it's the tyres that's causing the problem. Do you live near Ramsbottom? No, of course not, no one does, but if you did, I have a spare set of 15" with Toyo Proxes tyres you could try - they're good.

No, they are standard MK6 15 inch alloys with 195 / 50R 15 tyres, if that' helps..

I wouldn't have thought that you'd get tramlining with the 50 profile tyres, but it could help to go onto the tyre comparison websites such as tyrereviews.co.uk and see what other people who are using the same tyres have to say.

Funnily enough, I went to see a Ford specialist today, not about my car, but for work, I work in Telecoms.

Whilst I was there, I caught one of the Ford mechanics, and explained the symptoms to him.

He seemed pretty sure it's the lower arm bushes or something, it's pretty common in Fiesta's as they become soft over time.

I spoke to my mechanic who said that these are the only things that haven't been changed yet, but from a visual inspection, they looked ok.

Does this make sense to anyone? They're not easy to do and an expense I could do without if it is the problem.

Yes, it makes a lot of sense.

I suggested this in post #2!

I can only say that my 2006 Fiesta 1.4Tdci has done 191,000 miles and those bushes are one of the few things that I've not yet had a problem with!

OK, my Fiesta is on an 03 plate and to date, has only done 41,000 miles, I bought it from an old boy who had it sitting around on his drive, it had done 30,000 miles at the time.

My mistake for buying a car that had been sitting around, but when I blew out a few cobwebs, everything started going wrong. The discs warped, the shocks went, the tyres cracked, bearings failed, along with every squeak you can imagine.

I’ve been ironing out bits and pieces as I’ve gone, so you can see it’s not been the averagely used Ford Fiesta!!

Yes, in that case, rubber does perish when it's left out in the open, so the bushes could be perished. I'm not surprised that the tyres had cracked!

Problem solved (hopefully) had both lower arms changed and it seems to have solved the problem!! Many thanks for all that contributed to this post. On to the next one..
