2007 Focus 1.6 TDCI, 113k miles, worth it? - abtx

I'm looking at buying a budget diesel for driving to work, mostly. Any recommendations for the 2007 Focus 1.6 TDCI, 113k miles? Had it's belt and pump done recently, haven't seen the car yet. Are these engines durable? How many miles more they will pull?

I had a 108bhp version in a 2006 Focus - just note it is a Peugeot engine. Had two engine failures due to electronic issues in about 6 months. Beyond that I don't know much. I was concerned about it when we were looking at our Volvo V40, which has a version of that engine but seems to be more reliable. I read horror stories of the PSA 1.6 diesel, but as with anything there's always a risk. The key, I believe, is whether it had a DPF fitted.

I remember being told by the Ford dealer at the time that the 1.8 TDCI was a more proven and reliable engine, but others may know more on this.

Thanks for the reply. If it's a Pug engine then perhaps it's not worth it. Given the miles and high horsepower as for 1.6 turbo, might not be best choice. I read it is the DPF fitted engine, which should be replaced every 60k, so it looks like the car is close to majaor investment in a new DPF. Perhaps I'll go for a cheaper Mondeo 2.0 diesel or the more powerful 2.2 diesel.

If you are looking for a high mileage budget car, then I would stick to a petrol engine. Many high mileage diesels could be approaching some very expensive repairs at 100k plus. The 1.6 Ford /psa engine can be very durable,IF the correct servicing has been carried out with regular oil changes with the correct spec oil.

Is it a 90bhp or a 110bhp model? I believe in that year the 90bhp one did not have a DPF but the 110bhp one did and therefore is worth avoiding.

There's a thread here running to hundreds of posts about turbo issues with this engine, as above if its been serviced at least as well or better than specified its got a better chance of proving reliable, basically or worse still underserviced then it might prove an unpleasant and costly move.

If its cheap enough to throw away should it prove a bad 'un then why not.
