Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Trilogy

I wonder who authorised that mindless twaddle. Smacks of desperation for content to me. Nowadays, I tend to watch on iplayer, so I can miss the worst parts of the show. It can hardly be called a programme!

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - skidpan

Yes its twaddle but with regards to Peugeot its true. Back in my youth the 504 was a car wih a huge reputation and even smaller Peugeots were always a class above the BL, Ford and GM stuff at the time. Sadly that all started to go wrong from the 90's onwards.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - 72 dudes

I thought the piece on Peugeot was utterly pointless. I hate to see any car abused just to get a cheap laugh, and I think the 407 was a decent enough car.

They referred to the 607 as 'dire', but I remember trying a couple out when looking to replace my company Audi A6 about 13 years ago, and I quite liked them. (I chose a Volvo S60 as it happens)

Sure, they have lost their 'Frenchness' and solidity in recent decades, but I can think of other automotive brands which would have been more deserving of this infantile bit of nonsense.

As an aside, what is going on with Star in a Reasonably Priced Car? Ed Sheeran and Ollie Murs for goodness sake? Trying desperately to hang on to younger viewers maybe?

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Steveieb

There are rear windscreen badges available which says "Built in France - Fell apart in Britain" which sums up what Top Gear were trying to get over last night.

It is well known that Peugeot have been asked to carry on producing the old 405 s in parts of Africa because of their simplicity and durability.

But who would want to be a Peugeot salesman this morning. My girlfriend has decided to keep her Peugeot in the garage this morning and drive her Z3 instead.

Reports from France suggest that even in their homeland the French are moving towards buying German instead of their home products.

But if Renault were to sell a replacement R 16 today I would be the first in the queue to buy one whatever the build quality.

Why would anyone watch Top gear and then complain about what they do on the show? Surely it's been on long enough to know what it's all about and the thinsg they do on the show. If you don't like it just turn it off!

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Andrew-T

If you don't like it just turn it off!

Better still, do what I do, don't turn it on to start with. T-G is just a free outing for overgrown schoolboys acting like 'celebrities'. Vapid hooliganish behaviour, much of it.

Don't know what they said about Peugeot, but it's probably irrelevant.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - davecooper
Don't watch Top Gear any more and I certainly wouldn't take any buying advice from it. I struggled to watch the last series and feel it is all becoming a bit predictable with a tired format. I tend to watch the Classic Car Show now for my weekly motoring fix.
Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Snakey

How come every time a new series of TG starts the whingers appear on here?

Just watch something else instead.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Gibbo_Wirral

Sadly that all started to go wrong from the 90's onwards.

Not in the case of the 206. Many thousands of them still going strong, especially the early models.

Same with the 307. Get one with the 90bhp 2L diesel and these will eat the miles. I know of at least two with 210,000 miles and 250,000 miles on.

I'd say things started to go wrong when they introduced the 207 and 308 range.

As for Top Gear as a show, its just an hour of lies. When they were in Australia the other week Clarkson made a huge song and dance about being unable to use a fishing rod. Yet in an earlier episode when they went to the Isle of Man, he could fish perfectly.

I usually enjoy Top Gear, it is mindless viewing, and sometimes very funny. But the Peugeot 'sketch' was mindless and not funny. I wondered about them messing about like that on public roads. I can only assume it was carefully choreographed, so they would not cause damage to other road users.

Anyway, yes I got the impression they must have been stuck for ideas.

It's a pity you can't have an opt out on the state broadcasters tax grab, bit like you have the option to opt out of the political fund if you are a union member.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - bathtub tom

Don't know why this is being discussed here, years ago Clarkson described it as an 'entertainment' show.

Probably better in: General discussion ( non motoring )

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Trilogy

Not a complaint - an observation. You can always rely on some people to get hold of wrong end of stick. I did say I usually watch it on iplayer. I know we don't always read all of some posts.

Bathtub tom. Loads of stuff on here is repetetive.

As for Peugeot, they are probably no worse than a VW Passat.

BTW, a more sensible perspective of Peugeot. www.autocar.co.uk/blogs/anything-goes/my-favourite...s

Can't believe the 406 coupe wasn't mentioned last night.

madf, the Focus MK1 has a long list too. Can't see Jeremy slagging that off.

Totally agree TG is an entertainement show. The cars that they view at times most people will never see in the flesh let alone drive. Its all good fun and obviously three middle aged blokes taking the P$$$ out of each other and the cars is what the show is all about

I have it set on series link so I can skip through 90% of the programme. I thought last night's section on Peugeot marked a new low; what could have been Top Gear's version of edutainment struck me as simply silly. To be fair, the format has lasted far longer than I ever thought possible but I suspect that it's reaching a natural end.

On a really geeky sidepoint I seem to recall that the 309 GTi is now considered to be a better car than the 205 hot hatch ever was.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Hamsafar

Did anyone see Great British Sewing Bee? I did, all those boring taped seams and bad stitching - I hate sewing what a pointless waste of time and those bright fabrics!

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Trilogy

Kerbed, best way to watch it. Agree it was a new low, IMO.

Actually, 309 GTI always was better, even when new. Just looks nowhere near as nice as 205, quite dowdy in comparison. Dashboard design of 309 didn't help, probably one of the worst ever!

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - kerbed enthusiasm

Hamsafar. I believe the discussion of a motoring programme on a motoring forum is relevant. I'm sure you'd be the first to agree that if you don't want to read this thread, you really don't have to.

Trilogy, I owned a 309 although certainly not the GTi. Driving it was a delight but I was always pleased to be in the car looking out. It had remarkable ability to shed bits of itself and continue to function.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - davecooper
Ahh! The 406 Coupe. One of the best looking Coupes ever produced.
Top Gear - Peugeot last night - bazza

I had to find it on i player after reading this and agree-- it was a new low. Even allowing for the fact that it's entertainment rather than a serious motoring programme, it was wide of the mark-- just purile non- funny stupidity. I'm suprised May allowed himself to stoop that low to be honest, he's a serious broadcaster when he wants to but needs to disassociate himself from this drudge. it's holding him back. it's a pity, as it could have been a worthwhile slot looking into the gradual malaise afflicting Peugeot from those 205 GTi days to the present distinctly average offerings. As it was, well it was cringeworthy.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - RicardoB

Oh dear... As the late equally refreshingly non-PC chap Michael Winner might have said: "Calm down dears"!

Top Gear is an entertainment and very successful brand. I wish I'd thought of it all. It is one of the few things on TV that I try to make a point of watching. It ticks a lot of boxes... Sunday night before a week of real life challenges and stresses, it makes me laugh. You know it's not meant to be too serious.

Let's stop carping on about it - there are other channels and off buttons available.

The Peugeot thing was a bit daft, but they did have a good point - they lost a lot in the way of style and quality in the late 90s/early 00s - although I loved the 406 coupe. The current crop of Peugeots - 208, 308 are showing signs of getting back on the right track, IMHO. And I think that might have been a sort of point they were making.

I agree that the Star in a cheapish car is on the whole naff - the fake/put on desperation by the "star" wanting to know how they have done. Do we care? And anyway, when actors come on, I've usually no idea who they are anyway. Actually, thinking about it, I'm out of touch with F1 stars now as well!

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - ExA35Owner

And as for the 405 (and even 404 and 403) in Africa, amazingly tough vehicles that went on and on. Pick-ups modified into minibuses with a box body and unbelievable numbers of passengers in the back were the first mobility available to many isolated communities. Some of the ones I have been in are real triumphs of the bush welder's skills. These cars also did well in the Safari Rally and local competitions.

Ever noticed how Richard Hammond starts to speak really slowly when he is explaining something, as if he is addressing a class of infants?

It's a funny coincidence how him and James May both say 'becuz' for the word 'because'.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Leif

Ever noticed how Richard Hammond starts to speak really slowly when he is explaining something, as if he is addressing a class of infants?

Presumably he speaks as if talking to family and friends.

There was one episode in the last series narrated by Hammond alone, and by gum was it the most boring and pompous 1 hour. Well, okay, that is an assumption, I turned off after five minutes, but caught a few more minutes throughout the show. He takes himself so seriously. Whatever Clarkson's faults, and he possibly might have at least one, he can be entertaining.

It's a funny coincidence how him and James May both say 'becuz' for the word 'because'.

Top Gear - Peugeot last night - Steveieb

James May's strange behaviour in last Sunday's programme must be a reaction to his new haircut !

Phoned Peugeot Customer Care with a problem with my girlfriend's 207 and was tempted to ask the French lady on the desk whether they had seen the programme at Head office

Agreed, the peugeot piece was barrell scraping ... but hammond winching up claerwen dam in a modified series 1 lanny the week before more than made up for it.

Agreed. I normally have a mild dislike of Hammond, but he deserves respect for that.
