Peugeot 208 - Gap/Return to Invoice Insurance - capricorn

Hi, everyone.

Next week I'm changing my car and want to take out RTI cover.

Does anyone have experience of buying this type of policy online and if so are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Don't take out the gap insurance offered by the dealer. You can usually buy the same level of cover on the open insurance market for half the price (just use google to find companies selling cover).

Of course, you can use alternative quotes as a stick to beat the dealer's price down ... forewarned is forearmed.

A major downside is the poor value - having bought a car you should expect it to depreciate and be able to fund that - so the only value of Gap Insurance is to cover the big depreciation drop in year 1 - many comprehensive policies cover that as "new-for-old" anyway in the 1st year.

IMO this type of insurance is a waste of money. In 30 years of motoring I have had 1 car stolen and no rightoff's. I suspect most people would say similar statistics

Being a new car when purchased and had the car been less than a year old the insurance company (not GAP) like all insurance companies have to do would have purchase another new car, sadly it was 13 months old. In my case direct line sourced me with 12 month old car of the less mileage without cost to me i.e. like for like 13 month old car.

So pay for a quality insurance company that has a track record of paying the replacement value i.e. Dealer retail price and not one that will try and fob you off with trade in value. An issue you may have is that the finance is greater than the value of the car, but that should not in years 2/3 if deposit is sensible and rather than gap you put it towards the deposit and pay less on the finance in the first place.

I've bought three policies using www.ala.co.uk - easy to deal with, and the 4 year policies I've bought have cost around £180 (last purchased in 2012). ALA do cover now from 1 to 5 years

On another forum I use, a member had his Rav4 stolen back in 2013, and ALA settled his GAP insurance claim quickly and fully - think he used them again for his replacement car.

Be aware that some insurance companies are limiting the new car replacement clause to cars where you are the first registered owner - so with some insurers, cars such as pre-registrations no longer qualify under this clause.

Gap insurance is fairly cheap when one considers the cost against the purchase price of the car. A £180 policy representing about 1.3% of the purchase price of the new car.

A personal choice whether you have GAP or not.

Hi

I've had a quote from ALA following your comments about them and it would be £79 for three years which isn't much when you consider the total cost of buying the car.

Granted total loss or theft maybe a long shot but as Ilive in Britain's car theft capital maybe worth a punt!!!

Anyway thanks to you for your comments and indeed to everyone who kindly responded. In the end it's a gamble as are many things if life.

Many thanks.

Like all insurance its not until you claim that you experience the possible downsides.

A friend's car was written off last July. Within a week his insurance company offered market value based on the cost of the car at a main dealer. Ideal as the dealer would hold the car.

Colleague had called the GAP company and they spent the next 5 MONTHS arguing market value with his insurance company. The car he wanted was sold, he had no car so had to buy something to tide him over, sort insurance on that car etc, he also had to continue to pay the loan on the car which was written off.

The amount being argued over was £500. It would have been less hassle for him to pay this!
