A car transport ship, heading from Southampton to Germany, ran aground last night and is now listing very heavily www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-30670746
I wonder what cars she'd just taken on - a few thousand of Solihull's finest perhaps ?

I have seen everything being loaded. Minis, every type of jaguar and land rover, Bentley, RR, Honda, any number of JCB branded vehicle and specialist trucks etc.
I understand this was a usual mixed load and hope the securing chains are designed to hold the ship in a 45 degree list, if not get the insurance claim forms out!

It seems to have run aground near high tide, which is why it's listing so much at low tide and will make it difficult to get off

Wasn't a ship-load of cars scrapped once purely because they'd been leaning at 'extreme' angles for a while, and this was considered detrimental? I'm pretty sure I'm not making that up!

Could be an instant increase in spare parts availability?
When I was in Saudi Arabia in the early 70s a pilot trainee landed his Lightning with the wheels up - instant spares for the other planes on-site.
The pilot was a Prince so there were no repercussions for him.

Looking at the pictures I suspect everything will be written off. The ship was on track, then did a very sudden 180. As there would have been pilots on board suggestions are mechanical failure, rather than navigation issues.

Looking at the radar plot shown on one news website, she came down the Thorn Channel on the Calshot side of the Solent to avoid Bramble Bank and instead of doing a "90 left" at the West Bramble navigation mark to go East out of the Solent, she did a "180 left" straight back onto Bramble Bank itself.
Bramble Bank is a sandbank exposed at low tide where an annual cricket match takes place.

Latest report says the ship was deliberately run aground after it developed a dangerous list to one side.
Maybe the cars weren't chained down properly and moved around when the ship rounded the West Bramble mark - it's a tight turn by ship standards.

Looks like a good call. If it had gone over in the shipping lane Southampton port could have been inaccessible to all larger vessels.
Having done a few cruises from Southampton the route out of the port really is something else. I noticed today that P & O Adonia took a right turn out of Southampton water to the west of the Isle of Wight. I understand this isn't usual and ships any larger than that don't have such an option.

The West Solent is much shallower than the East Solent - I think medium ships can use the West Solent but only around high tide, otherwise they go east, like the big ships have to.

Some years ago, c1992, we used the then Stena/Sealink ferry from Southampton to Cherbourg. Outwards was overnight but return crossing in daylight and made via West Solent. The Captain pointed out that it was a tricky navigation but managed to keep up a running commentary as we passed Needles, Hurst Castle etc.
I've also observed the preserved steam ship Shieldhall do it. IIRC she had to wait off the Needles for tide to rise a bit.

Lists are always to one side or the other, RT ..... :-))

Some petrolheads may not know that.

It's a common word - people should know (hopefully!)

I can live with bodywork damage if the price is right ... and can cope with left hand drive, even in the UK, done that before

I just did some RI claims work on a car carrier ship claim Tricolor from 2002 iirc. Its stuff like this that keeps me in work. So not all bad eh?
|
Oh, I don't know. The steps some people will take just to get a free car wash :)
Thankfully all crew members have been successfully rescued.
|
1200 unspecified JLR models, 65 MINI and 105 JCBs are said to be the cargo.
|
The Times thought it was Bentleys.
|
I've seen a report that a single Rolls-Royce Wraith was among the cars.
