Jaguar X-Type Estate - Faulty turbocharger - PeterDM
My Jaguar X-Type diesel 2.2 is 8 years old and has done 56,000 miles. Engine warning light flashes and power is very restricted on starting. Usually recovers if I stop and restart after a few miles.

Official Jaguar service agent has diagnosed sticking turbo actuator and says the only solution is a new turbocharger for about £2,000.

I am planning to sell the car soon, but would like to get it working properly if this can be done at a lower cost.

Is there a cheaper solution than a complete new turbocharger from a Jaguar dealership? Can anyone recommend a suitable garage near London SW19?

I'd be grateful for any advice

This may do the job.I would think any good indy garage familiar with this Mondeo engine can take on this job.reviveturbocleaner.com/.Is it the turbo vanes sticking or the eletronic actuator in trouble.?Either will give reduced performance.

The actuator and variable vane ring can be cleaned using a cleaning product. Innotec Turbo Clean is ideal for this. Google it. The only snag with the X Type is the the location of the turbo. Unlike the VAG range, the exhaust outlet faces downwards and so the product will just spill out. I have dismantled these in situ and cleaned them with perfect results. A fiddly job but it can be done. A new turbo is not required in all but the most serious cases.

Thank you. Yes, it's so crowded under that bonnet it took me an hour to change a headlight bulb.

A decent independant can remove turbo complete and clean on bench. The waste gate from memory has brass leaves that stick and can be free'd off and cleaned by hand. Probably looking at a 3-4 hour labour bill. Jag dealershipe aren't going to mess about cleaning up the turbo they will sell you a new one (yyou can afford it as far as they are concerned). Even if the turbo is U/S a replacement one with a 12 month warranty from one of the reputable turbo suppliers online will be 600ish and 2-3 hours to fit so still well less than half what Jag want

My son fixed the Turbo on his golf using "Mr Muscle" oven cleaner, a lot cheaper I believe...
