vaxhall vivaro 1.9 cdti 2004 - cam sensor breaking - mx92crosser

hi i have a vivaro 1.9 cdti

today i had to move the van on site it started as usual followed by a strage noise so i tured it off

the van would not start after that glow pug light flashed on and off when cranking the engine.i had a simular prob with an old van i took the cam sensor out and the plastic part that covers the sensor was missing so has fell off so thats in where the cam belt is i think replaced with a new sensor van started but the noise is still there.i have left the van there.the van starts on the key just the noise issue what damage can this plastic piece do ?

turned out to be the cam gear keyway shearing what damage could this do as i only started it
