Probably the sender. If they short to earth this can happen. Normally cheap to buy and simple to fit.

I am trying to help but like a majority of people on this site I don't just happen to have a 1998 Micra on the desk in front of me.

To repeat what I said before (just in case you can read) a temp gauge that goes to hot immediately is a classic sign of the sender shorting to earth. It could be the wiring as well of course, investigations ar needed.

To locate the relevent senders a manual is what you should buy. The cost will save you garage charges many times over especially on an old car which is relatively simple.

Alternatively try an auto electrician.

If you don't want to take my advice that is your choice.

Suggest you Google Nissan Temp Sensor as it would appear it's in different places on various engines. Once located remove the attached wire, if the temperature gauge is then on " low" you've got a faulty sensor, if it's still on "high" then you've got a faulty gauge or a short circuit on the wiring.

So you thank one poster for suggesting the gauge yet you call me a clown for suggesting the same.

Suggest you learn some manners before posting again.
