TerraClean (decarb) for Volvo S40 GDi. - EDW2000

My s40 has 145k, was thinking of getting a TerraClean. Costs about £90.

Anyone get any views? Maybe I should get a gas analsysis first?

Do a compression check if all OK and it's going well don't waste your money. Todays fuels don't cause carbon to build up as was the case years ago.

Agreed,

I notice that this additive has never had a bad write up,or anyone say its not beneficial which makes me very sceptical about it (I do not agree with any additives anyway)

Usually you find an article about an additive which says it did not work properly as tried by a customer, but there is nothing but praise for it much the same as other additives advertised but without any bad comments

There also seems to be very little info of it apart from it works

I notice that this additive has never had a bad write up,

Terraclean is not an additive (as such).

Really? Petrol / diesel fuels aren't hydrocarbons anymore then?

The much more precise nature of fuel regulation compared to years ago, clean burn and better quality fuels does mean that engines carbonise less than they used to, but they can and do still coke up. On a petrol it's easy to look inside with an endoscope. Less easy with a diesel.

I'd suggest spending that 90 quid buying Shell V Power instead for the next couple of years.

This system of cleaning does work to a point. However ,the op says he has a volvo with a Gdi engine.Due to the design and set up of the injectors on these and similar Fsi and Hpi engines ,fuel is injected directly into the engine cylinder (similar to a diesel)and not the inlet manifold behind the inlet valve. So any cleaning process does not clean the intake tract. A point worth considering.

If only (filtered) air is going down the inlet tract, does it need cleaning?

I didn't sugest that modern fuels don't produce any carbon at all and the first part of your second paragraph acknowledges my point. Highlighting only the first part of the sentence and ignoring the rest alters it's meaning.

Why try to be smart?

I saw this stuff being used on an episode of Wheeler dealers but, I'm not convinced that it is any better than a good in tank fuel cleaning additive and a good blast up the motor.

IIRC he (Ed China) claimed that the CO level was "A liitle under 1%" but, The display on his gas analyser was showing around 0.65% When your talking small percentages that is a big difference ~ 40%

Thanks to everyone who answered.

I think I'll give it a miss for now and talk to my local garage when next service is due.
