I have a major problem with the dipped headlights when driving on unlit country roads. The beam has a cut off point at about 45 deg. at the front near side giving a blind spot and is very dangerous. Toyota is aware of the problem as there have been many complaints, they are in complete denial. Toyota we need a fix!

Having been through the comments on the Toyota UK blog, there seems to be around 7 owners who have complained/are complaining about the headlights - out of approx 511 comments. On Toyota Owners Club a few owners have complained, but others are OK with the headlight performance. Two things you could consider:

1. ensure the headlight levelling control is properly set to 0 - there is some movement in the control.

2. the Auris comes with HIR2 bulbs for which there is no upgrade available, and certainly Osram (who I have been in touch with) and who are one of the two manufacturers of these bulbs, have no current plans to offer an upgrade. You could try fitting upgrade HB4/2006 bulbs (which require a slight modification to the base to fit the HIR2 bulb holder) - eg Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited

The headlight brightness is fine. It is the arc of the beam that is is the problem as there is a cut off point at the front near side. This gives a blind spot on unlit country roads, so that you can not see the edge of the road or any body, especially on left hand bends. Brighter bulbs would make the problem worse as it would make the near side even darker, it is the reflectors that are the problem.

There are top rated and reliable car you can rely if you are planning of buying a new one. Consumer Reports released their survey, ranking the reliable automobile models. In the long run, the consumer watchdog found little relationship between sticker price and how reliable a vehicle type is.

find out how to adjust the alignment but don't set it too high or you will blind oncoming traffic, and pehaps be breakng the law (?)

Toyota Auris 2013 - Toyota Auris Headlights - HandCart

Or, is it possible to align the nearside foglight so that it fills-in the area you want illuminating?

And then drive with the front foglights switched on.
As far as I can tell from the large proportion of cars that do this, it must (?) surely (?) be legal...

;-)

Fog lights are for fog not everyday use and it is illegal even if everyone does it.

Toyota Auris 2013 - Toyota Auris Headlights - A cynic

I agree, it is illegal, and I have always considered people using foglights, without fog, to be idiots.

However, since buying an Auris recently, I have found that it is the only way to travel safely on unlit country roads. The cutoff on the nearside is so sharp that it is impossible to see the kerb for a significant distance on left hand bends. The front foglights fill this area.

I contacted Toyota GB's Customer relations department recently to tell them about this. The answer, not unexpectedly, was a polite go away and don't bother us, the Auris lighting conforms to current regulations.

Given that the current requirements for both angle of visibility and size of illuminated area for Dipped Beam Headlamps is "No requirement", they undoubtedly conform.

So legal or not, I shall continue to switch the foglights on when I am travelling on unlit country roads. Anything else is dangerous.

I agree that the headlights are a problem - I have an Auris Tourer and on unlit roads dipped beams are hopeless - it isn't just me either as no one else can see!

Is there an answer? Adjusted the lights as much as I could from inside the car but still no good.

From the relatively low level of complaints on Toyota Owners Club, the headlights on the current Auris seem to be an issue for some people, but not for others. Similarly with the current Yaris.
Both cars use HIR2 bulbs for which there are no upgrade bulbs available from either Philips or Osram - the only two manufacturers of this fitting. Some have tried fitting 9006 upgrade bulbs (eg Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited) which need a modification to the base to fit.

I don't know if these people can help you?

Certainly it's a problem and as I research my next car IMO this is a good reason not to purchase this make / model

My Auris, which I've only had a month, does not seem badly affected. There is a noticeable cut-off but not dangerous in my opinion. I negotiated unlit roads in the Lake District Last weekend with no problem. It is a very impressive car which I'd recommend to anyone.

The main issue with this site - www.hids4u.co.uk/hidkits.php?car=36652 - is that they quote the wrong bulb fitting for the second generation Auris.

H11's were fitted as low beam on the first generation Auris - production of which ended in October 2012.

The second generation Auris sold from December 2012 uses HIR2 bulbs, for which there is currently no direct HID kit.

I picked up my 2014 Auris Hybrid drove home and leaving the M74 at fullarton road rutherglen clipped the kerb as dimmed headlamps in my estimation poor at best and with the latest dimmed street lighting cost me two new alloy wheels and one new tyre from the nearest toyota dealer cost me over £900.00.Toyota have told me I will get the latest Auris headlamps fitted under warranty in near future.

I know this is an old thread, but I have just bought a used 2015 Auris Hybrid.

I am amazed by the lack of left side illumination from the headlights. Just as reported here, I find turning left into an unlit road a dangerous procedure. No other car I have had in many years motoring has had this problem.

The complaints seem to be only from the era around 2013-2015. Does anyone know if the problem was sorted on later models and if so can the headlights be changed and will Toyota pay under remaining warranty!

I believe this has been widely discussed on the toyota owners club Auris and Yaris forums. My Yaris is equipped with H4 headlights, so I haven't been following it.

Your Toyota dealer should be aware of a service bulletin regarding early model second generation Auris headlights and possible replacement. Visit your dealer and ask.

That's really odd because if you research the beam pattern for a UK rhd (dips to the left) headlamp there is supposed to be "kick-up" to the left to illuminate the left hand kerb and any pedestrians walking there. It's almost like it has a beam pattern for a European lhd (dips to the right) lamp. Has the model perhaps been fitted with the wrong lamp units?
