Watching my local indy tackle a change of starter motor on a Cayenne, I wonder if this ranks along with the most difficult jobs.

After searching underneath for the motor he consulted the internet to find it buried beneath the inlet manifold of which there are eight.

Apparently a water pipe can leak filling the motor with water and shorting it out. The replacement pipe costs over £500.

Are there any other impossible repairs that you have experienced. Step forward Subaru owners

The 5.0 V10 diesel Toureg has to be a top contender. I understand that many of the engine ancialliary replacement tasks, such as alternator, require the engine to be dropped out. Book time is something like 9-10 hours for removal and same for replacement - so s repair could easily book at 25-30 hours depending what it is.

A shame as I'd rather like one!

First A Class MB takes some beating for stupid design, subframe or engine out for a starter motor replacement.

The we get to the Diesel version, the injectors of which get stuck rigidly in place with carbon, i've seen 3ft slide hammers welded to a failed injector and strong men whacking the hammer with all their might and failing miserably to remove a stuck injector...i'm told the head can't be removed without the injectors being removed first, there's a catch 22 situation...my MB indy avoids having anything to do with A and B classes whenever possible.

I helped my lad change the heater matrix on his Toledo, never again, the dash in its entirety had to come out which necessitated the front seats and centre console out too, then half the bulkead engine side had to come out to gain access to the bolts holding it in...even changing the normal radiator required the removal of the front end of the car, a car designed only to be made not maintained.

On the subjet of Subaru, so far the Outback has proved a pleasure to work on, well engineered with a view to regular maintenance and repair not just cheap manufacture...mind you the spark plugs took me 3 hours to change all 6 but its a comfy job lying on a warm carpet working from underneath, not a winters job by any stretch and not sure i'd tackle an engine out job any more.

Lad and i changed the clutch on his Imprezza, simple straightforward job requiring only normal tools, though the box and transfer box is a heavy old lump and not a job for one man.

Step forward Subaru owners

Ex-Subaru owner stepping forward - apart from a battery replacement, done in about 2 minutes, nothing ever went wrong.

The problem is the ever-increasing emissions equipment that have to be incorporated in modern engines - in mk1 Escorts there was almost enough room for the mechanic to get into the engine bay alongside the engine.

Mark 1 and current fiat doblo where a breeze to work on, likewise the mark 1 and current Citroen berlingo multispace / Peugeot partner tepee. Lots of space to get access.

Likewise the early 1997 - 2004 Hyundai/ kias where easy to work on.

The car a mechanic once turned down the work was a Renault Modus, it had half the engine and components under the dash and made access a long slow task.

Also had mechanics complain about Mark 3 or 4 astra. One of the common failures on the 1.6 was the thermostat, in GMs genius they had placed it behind the cam belt at the bottom of the engine.

Probably other cars to, but they spring to mind.

The first prize for dumb design creating a mechanic's nightmare, or a nice little earner for warranty work-depending on your point of view, has got to go to the Discovery.

Unlike the 2.7 V6 diesel in which designers had anticipated the problem and replumbed the engine with only one turbo, the twin turbos of the 3.0V6 diesel require the completre body to be lifted off the ladder rail chassis to provide access to the turbos. (from honest john car reviews)

Probably got 20k service intervals too, a long turbo life guarantee..:-)

Body off/on with a Disco only takes 2-3 hours - nowhere nearly as long as it takes to remove a v10 Toureg engine for similar jobs.

Presumably if you have access to fifty thousand quids worth of lifting equipment it's a 2-3 hour doddle - be interested to know what the standard workshop time is for that job.

Aye, the Modus is a horrid thing to work on. The book time for replacing the rocker cover gasket is 7.4 hours !!!!

Yes, I did say ROCKERCOVER, not the head gasket, which is a 13 hour job by the way. Ironically, the time given for remove and install a complete engine is 7.5 hours so if you need to replace a cylinder head gasket it's either time to get rid or just buy a second hand engine and fit that instead.

Subaru Imprezzas, certainly ones I see and hear, seem to have a design fault with the exhaust silencer systems. Or it could be the nut behind the steering wheel.

I seem to remember the factory procedure for cambelt replacement on the 5-cylinder Fiat Coupes was an engine-out job, although some specialists say it can be done with the engine in place by moving some bits around.

I like modert modern cars and how easy they are to drive and how safe they are but i dont like how difficult they are to work on and fault coad could mean many things.

I also like old cars for there baiscness ( if that is a word ) I like how easy they are to work on and how acessable things are, its a shame that cars must have so many computers to run things that only 20 years go it would of been mechanical. Just look at the prius and how the breaks are computer comtrold because of he regenativ breaking.

Yes,this is perfectly true. Fiat wanted over 1k. to do mine, and this was over 10 years ago! I ended up driving from n.wales to Birmingham to get it done by a specialist. He just removed the engine mountings on the belt side and tilted the engine to get the belt cover off. He charged me £400.

Despite its previous rust issues (now it's built in Romania instead of India. RHD Dusters should be fine) the Dacia Duster is a breeze to work on.

I presume the other cars in the Dacia range are also straightforward being based on the old Renault Clio.

Oil filter on mid 2000s Renault Scenic diesel.

Sited behind plastic wheel arch proection in the wheel arch.

So to change oil filter, remove wheel, wheel arch protector every time.

Unsurprisingly Renault Scenic diesels used to blow up due to turbos seal wear...( dui to lack of filter changes..I suspect)
