is it possible to take a4.0 petrol engine out of a p38 range rover and replace with the 2.5 bmw lump without too much trouble?

I don't know, but you will be busy swapping engines in your cars.

I try to buy a car with an engine I like, it saves a lot of bother.

But good luck anyway.

All of the engine management electronics are different.

The exhaust systems are entirely different, so another load of replacement parts.

The fuel pump might need changing, so it can pump thicker diesel.

The fuel pump lifter will probably need changing.

The fuel filler nozzle might not even take a diesel pump (diesel nozzles are larger).

All in all, it's probably not worth the trouble. Would probably be cheaper to scrap the entire V8 car, and buy a diesel rangie

As well as above:

engine subframe is different
fuel tank is different
gearbox bell housing is different

If the aim is to reduce fuel costs through greater economy, then an LPG conversion would be much more financially viable.

Pop the V8 into your Transit Connect when you've done - it will fly!
