Citroen/Peugeot - Question for 659FBE re: TUD5 engines. - Wackyracer

What I want to know is, What is the differences between the engines codes VJX, VJY and VJZ.

I'm asking because I'm a bit confused why some filter manufacturers list a different oil filter for them although, They are essentially the same engine.

I've been informed by the filter manufacturer that one filter has a higher flow rate than the other.

As far as I'm aware, the differences relate to whether Lucas or Bosch fuel injection equipment is fitted, and whether the engine is fitted with an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR).

The differences in use are minimal, but long term, the Bosch fuel equipment has far better prospects. All Bosch equipped engines I've seen have EGR - which frequently becomes blocked with soot and has no effect on performance -so best left alone.

All oil filters for this engine are the same - beware, M20 thread, not 3/4 UNC.

Fuel filters differ according to fuel equipment fitted. For a Bosch equipped car, I would recommend filters only from Bosch or Mann & Hummel. Chinese copies may not give you long term satisfaction.

In its day, the TUD5 was a really useful engine, good for 200k miles+ with a belt timing drive designed to do its job to the stipulated limit. Economical, but no ball of fire.

659.

That pretty much sums up what I suspected to be the difference.

I've always used Purflux filters (supplied by Citroen) as they are original equipment.

Recently I bought a Mann oil filter from a factors and was supplied with a W716/1 which has all the right dimensions and thread but, Then I noticed that Mann's catalogue lists 2 filters for the TUD5. Having contacted Mann they now tell me the correct filter should be W712/8 which looks identical but, apparently has a higher flow rate and more filter paper.

I'm a bit confused as they list both filters for the VJY depending on model year but, Only one of the filters for the VJZ engine code and none for the VJX.
