Do people really still watch a show about a mildly irritating man, a moderately irritating man and a very irritating man driving about in motor cars?

I do, because it's about the most 'entertaining' thing on telly, which is otherwise completely stuffed with awful talent shows, dancing shows, reality shows, cookery shows, shows that incite wives to 'require' a complete new k****** etc, and dramas about people getting murdered in grisly ways (which I WOULD watch, but the wife won't allow any of them on the screen).

;-)

(? what's censorious about a meal-preparation room beginning with 'k' ?!)

You need to try BBC 4 then.

A great Horizon documentary last night about the Voyager spacecraft and then a new comedy show with Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook called the Detectorists which was quite watchable.

Why that BBC 3 channel still exists on TV rather than online only is beyond me.

You're outside its 16-34 target audience then?

This message board keeps getting spammed by stupid k************ manufacturers (or rather I think it is one company in particular) - blooming idiots. The word beginning with 'k' was added to the swear filter in an effort to thwart them but they still continue to blight this forum every so often. Small minded individuals.

Yes. It's entertaining.

H982 FKL is a Kent registration from 1990-91. Can any expert tell us if that Porsche could have dated from then? If so, it could well be genuine.

H982 FKL ? - TedCrilly

Genuine or not if you were a TG reasearcher or producer with a huge budget and were tasked with providing inspiration for the show then saw that number for sale on an aged Porsche...need I go on?

You would see it .........and in an instant a lightbulb would suddenly light up just above the top of your head.

Of course they are going to say its a coincidence but given their past from and the sheer odds iof it happening its a hard one to swallow. My own veiw is that they knew exactly what they were doing and are sticking two fingers up and shouting..."PROOVE IT"

Anyone else remember the episode when they were driving the Lotus, the TVR and the Jensen Healy around the country? JC started taking the p*** out of the other two by making words up out of the letters on the number plates of the cars the other two were driving. The camera than zooms in on JCs plate and (despite the claims that TG is not factual enough)........ we see the the letters C T U!

Coincidence?....yeah ok Mr Willman...whatever.

We can only hope JC gets thrown in jail with a large group of hairy argies.

Then perhaps he will have more respect.

H982 FKL ? - Armitage Shanks {p}

What have the Argentinians done to "Earn" our respect? Making corned beef, making thousands of their own people disappear and defaulting on a multi-billion international bail-out loan doesn't do it for me. tinyurl.com/lj2qv8f

H982 FKL ? - Armitage Shanks {p}

Even my smutty mind can't read anything into C T U, in that order!

H982 FKL ? - craig-pd130

The DVLA records show that the plate does belong to a grey Porsche 928, first registered in 1991, so it appears genuine.

Top Gear has carefully nurtured its own reputation for playing schoolboyish pranks followed by wide-eyed protestations of innocence. A reputation like that will eventually cause big problems, whether or not the situation was deliberately engineered.

H982 FKL ? - RicardoB

Like most readers/contributors here, I like to think I know and understand cars and motoring.

And yes, I watch Top Gear and enjoy it. Sorry!

But I'm not a Grauniad or Mirror reader, nor a humourless lefty or similar, all of whom are no doubt gnashing their teeth and waling for Clarkson and co to be "dealt with once and for all" by those in charge of the BBC over this outrageous situation. Dangerous, because many within the BBC are of this ilk, but hopefully they have the sense to see the dosh that the show brings in to them and the country (and yes, Clarkson and the crew)

It seems to me that those number plates are/were genuine to the cars and I sense considerable clutching at straws here.

Or, some people say (to coin a phrase) that it could just be a very clever bit of PR spinning by the team to build up anticipation and interest for what I assume is/was going to be a forthcoming "special"?

But calm down everyone

I wonder if the tedious threesome would notice if someone gave them a car with the registration TO 55 ERS for their next jaunt !

Insensitive childish prank ... he got what he deserved.

I'm all in favour of many of his escapades, good laugh and no-one harmed but this one goes beyoned what is acceptble because so many good people lost thier lives in the 1982 conflict - on both sides - and this dishonours them all.

What? A number plate that does not read anything to my eyes!

A gross over-reaction.

If it was FLK I'd be inclined to believe it was a stunt, but FKL err no. Since when has Falklands beens spelt Fakllands?

Its just the Argentines causing issues out of nothing again.

My neighbour has a personalised number plate, which he transfered onto his current car after he bought it. When I check it on DVLA website it shows the car as first registered in 2007 although the personalised plate was added later it does not show the original plate.

True - but we know Top Gear like their 'japes' and I expect this was just another of them. I look a it as they were not expecting anyone to notice the plate when in Argentina and then only mention it on the show but they were rumbled before they got filming done.

I thought the Argentinians claim there are only 'Malvinas' islands down there, don't recognise anywhere called Falklands?

H982 FKL ? - brum

You forget that Clarkson programs are targetting english audiences with his schoolboy humour. As time goes on his native jokes get more edgy, remember the usa episodes ? the "slant" insult? etc.

A war where so many young kids died doesnt need gloating over or making jokes about. Argentinians are intelligent and sensitive enough to realise when they are being abused, especially at a time when many are suffering so much because of international politics.

For clarkson to maintain it was a government plot is ludicrous, and for him to make capital of it with opinion pieces, this sums up his gall and money making ambitions....

Clarkson said the drama had a silver lining because it had provided a good ending for the Christmas special He ended his article with a reference to The Sun’s infamous headline about the sinking of the Belgrano. “I’d like to say ‘Gotcha’ at this point. But I won’t.”

And from platewave.com/H982FKL ..

Hi, thanks for all your support, TG fans! If you see us on the roads of Patagonia, give a little wave. Or a Nazi salute! Fnarr! Fnarr! (Just a little more of that trademark light-hearted TG racism there, for the fans!)

H982 FKL ? - Snakey

Amazing, people will stick up for the argentinians over JC et al on here now. Just because of their light hearted and extremely popular tv show.

Its not like they invaded a country or anything.

H982 FKL ? - TedCrilly

Here is a good one for you Jezza

Buy an old Porsche, put the number NYC 911 on it and drive across the USA..

Lets see how far you get. before someone notices.

H982 FKL ? - HandCart

For all we know, there may be some guy who's proud he was born and has lived all his life in New York City who also happens to have a Porsche 911 and already has exactly that plate attached to it and has no desire to change it.

H982 FKL ? - RickyBoy
... off to Bradford next sporting J1 HAD - allegedly ...
H982 FKL ? - TedCrilly

Quite possibly, but who in the western world woild failt to make the connection to the attrocities if they saw NYC 911?

With this consideration in mind would it be unreasonable for the Argentians to see H982 FKL and make a connection.....particularly when you consider the British are involved?

H982 FKL ? - Doc

Why do people get so wound up about a series of numbers and letters on a piece of plastic?

They do not form any words, nor make any statement, good or bad.

H982 FKL ? - TedCrilly

Tell that to those prepared to pay thousands for personalised plates.

H982 FKL ? - Avant

That's something I've never even come near to wanting. Is there anyone on here who has a personalised plate and would like to share their reasons? (Not that I want to argue - I'd just be interested to know the rationale.)

A friend has one. He just regards it as a bit of fun. Not even his initials, nor does it make a word. Some have them so no one can tell how new/.old the car is. I've considered having one but really prefer the anonymity of the original plate.

BTW, don't forget to delete the non-motoring post/thread.

H982 FKL ? - Happy Blue!

I had a 'private plate' once on a Volvo S80. It was S80 XXX (where XXX are my three initials).

Reason? I bought the car from a very close friend whose father-in-law had just died in sad circumstances and wanted to sell said father-in-law's car. I did not want widow and bereaved daughter to think that whenever they saw the car - "Oh look, there's Dad! - Oh he's dead..." and therefore feeling sad again.

I did not tell them I was doing it although they obviously saw the car around and I sold the car with plate a couple of years later. As we remain very good friends with this couple I have subsequently been told that my gesture was fully appreciated. I have not had one since.

Top Gear get followed where ever they go. Them visiting a country seems to be big news.

Their trip appears to have been widely blogged, photographed and reported in Chilean and Argentinian press with pictures of the car with the offending number plate and it was several days before one person mentioned it.

It wasn't as if this occured at the beginning of their trip - it was at the end after thousands had seen the car and offending plate so it couldn't have been that obvious.

If you check the DVLA records the car started off as H982FKL and then was on a private plate H1VAE for a few years before reverting to H982FKL. H1VAE is now on a 2006 white Porsche.

According to Top Gear when they took H982FKL off they found H1VAE underneath it still on the car where no doubt a lazy dealer had simply stuck a plate over it when taking the cherished plate off in some dim and distant past. I am inclined to believe this as I've seen it done loads of times.

BE11 END was apparently quickly made in the UK and FedEx'd or whatever out to them when the offending plate was discovered to use in a off-road finale.
