How can they say the level of traffic to their website was unprecedented? Surely by switching to this system they were expecting a massive increase of visitors?

This sort of thing is notoriously difficult to predict. The Jeremiahs have been wailing for a month a more that nobody knows about the change.

Looks now as though many did cotton on to fact that there was no need to allow transit time for the disc and sought to pay at last minute. Hopefully they'll have got the capacity bottleneck sorted next month and/or people will have to learn to spread transactions over a slightly longer period than evening of last day of the month.

Is this a case of people leaving renewal until the last possible moment, and then getting upset that the system has been cripped by tens of thousands of people who have also left it till the last possible moment, or stupidly checking if their car is still taxed?

You can renew your car tax for up to 4 weeks before the renewal date, so there is no excuse for leaving it till the last day.

not all of us are as independantly wealthy as yourself. Some of us get paid on the last working day of the month - which happens to be yesterday for September !!

I've been trying since last night to tax my car online but the website has remained stubornly unresponsive.

New tax disc system - Auristocrat

No sympathy.

Taxed mine without problem on 9th September.

Just an example of a poorly designed .gov IT system. Someone will have made a lot of money providing this system which isn't fit for purpose.

As for renewing your tax early, why should you? The system we're being forced to use should be able to deal with the demand. Its about time RFL was abandoned like the archaic tv license.

Just like commercial systems such as those for concerts etc that gum up there's a point where demand peaks are so massive that to have that capacity idle 99.99% of time would be absurd. People will learn over time not to all wait until 21:00 on last day of month to renew.

And the concept of RFL is long gone as the RF was abolished by WS Churchill as Chanellor well before WW2. It' just an impost on posession of a motor vehicle.

Last night the site was unresponsive. Just before 9.00 am this morning it was fine. Mine was left late as I wasn't sure whether or not I would SORN over the wintere.

I don't have this problem with the web site.

I always get my tax at the post office; I like to give them the business.

Me too, but sometimes just easier via interweb.

I find it much more convenient to do it online. I don't have time to go to the post office as I work very odd and unsociable hours. I just do it on my phone it takes 5 minutes.

I haven't been on here for a while, but the fact there still cannot be a thread even loosely discussing taxing a car prompts you to wheel out this line is depressing. It's like shutting the fridge and knowing nothing inside it changes.

I just think that if something was done in 1937 and people still don't know/care then Churchill obviously didn't do a good job of it, but that's by the by now. All I know is I've recently handed Gorgeous George £500 of my pounds which I'll never see again and in return they didn't even send me a real disc!

I got some bit of Xerox paper with a tax disc printed on it

If it ain't perforated, keep it. A bit like imperfect stamps, an unperforated tax disc could turn out to be quite valuable in the future.

I phoned and used the automated system. No problem at all and much easier than going to the post office as I always did in the past. Seems strange having nothing on the car window though

Could anyone clarify - we changed the car a few days ago. Woman at the PO counter said we had to apply to DVLA for a refund for the tax on the old car. However on the letter that came with the tax disc, which was valid from September 1st, it says the refund will be automatic. I suppose that's fine if so, as we paid for it online. (I don't know how it would work if we'd paid cash over the counter).

So am I right, then, in thinking I should tax the new car as normal using the V5 from the dealer, and put our trust in the perfect government system and wait for the refund to arrive?

We acquired Dads old car a couple of weeks ago. After a read of the DVLA site it all looked simple and that is the way its turned out.

Dad filled in the V5C which was sent to Swansea.

We insured the car and then taxed it on line using the ref in the new owners box of the bit that is handed over, its got an extra digit at the begining from memory. Took seconds.

We recieved the new V5C last Friday.

Dad got a letter today confirming he no longer owned the car together with a cheque for the tax refund.

As I said, really simple.

I wonder how many people believe that VED itself has now been abolished.

Would that excuse work? What do you mean, officer, they said on the news that I don't have to have a tax disc any more!

New tax disc system - skidpan

I wonder how many people believe that VED itself has now been abolished.

No doubt some idiots will try that excuse but it will not work.

Its only the disc that has become defunct and on any apperwork you get it clearly states that.

Just spent half-an-hour in my local PO with the new owner of my old car while he tried to tax it.

Went to the PO as the buyer could hand the cash over the counter and they checked it and credited my account immediately.

They had no idea how to tax the car! First of all said he had to complete a V65, but that looks like it's for a change to the vehicle. Then they said a V20 was necesary, but agreed it had no bearing on the subject. Finally they took his payment without completion of any forms.

Had the cheek to suggest that as it still had a current tax disc on, it would be OK - numpties!
