Are they the first main car manufacturers to realise the game is up in the mass market sector?

There is talk of the Renault-Nissan alliance doing a deal with Proton since Honda's deal is set to be limited.

I dont understand Honda and Toyota, there is a clear demand for budget motoring in europe, if Honda got into bed properly with the likes of Proton and Toyota did likewise with Perodua, they could take on Dacia who seem to have the market to themselves.
